Smile Purchase or not? Maintenance, extended warranty and tire protection.

Hi all,

I am newbie here. Just purchased RX 350 with Nav,PM and some small options. Guess all RX 350 are the same except with or w/o Nav. But I am not sure if I should purchase maintenance package for $1500 or extended warranty for $2500 and the tire protection for $500. Everyone gets two free maintenance 6mon/5000 mile and 12 month. So the maintenance package covers the actually four years, although it claims for 5 years. Anyone knows how much the maintenance cost? I know each maintenance fee is different but don't know exactly how much even the finance person who sells the product. She only know the 3 years maintenance cost $800. Purchase or not? Please give some advice. I have few days to think about it. Thanks in advance.

You're giving back all of whatever deal you were able to workout with the dealer on your new car if you bite on those items. I personally would never buy any of that stuff.

You can always get the extended warranty anytime before the 4/50 from an outside Toyota source like Troy Dietrich at Toyota of Greenfield in MA for about $700 less and save the sales tax if you're not in MA.I've bought from him as well as many on Toyota/Lexus forums.
I wouldn't go for the maintenance package or tire protection either.

I got the extended warranty to 100k, maintenance package to 100k, and car care package. Main reason I went with the car pkg is because they guarantee no stains on the carpets for 5 yrs. If it stains, they replace the whole carpet.

I also chose to prepay the maintenance so I dont have to worry about it each time I go for service. I saved 31% over current service interval prices by prepaying.

I plan on keeping the car at least 100k miles, so I wanted the peice of mind from extended warranty coverage.

It all comes down to whether you want to pay now, or pay later. Either way you spend the money.

Anyone know where to buy a prepaid maintenance plan at a discount, like with the extended warranty?

Troy can't sell them because of some exclusive arrangement Lexus gave its dealers.

I was quoted $1500 (5 year 50k miles) and passed figuring I could do better on the open market (i.e., not in the finance guy's office)

Thanks,

-Eddie

We got 100k warranty as we avg 25k miles/year. We did NOT get maintenance as we can do most ourselves, and definitely didn't get tire option, because there are always more choices, usually better, as time goes on from non-dealer sources (like tire rack). Just our $0.02
Don't know if it holds the same for getting the warranty from outside the purchasing dealer, but our contract allows a refund of our purchase price (of the extended warranty) if we don't use it.

Geico has an option called MechanicalBreak down, which is equivalent to (and better than) the extended warranty. The condition is before 15000 mil/15 mon. Check out on their webiste.

Go Lexus extended warranty.Less hassle than the Mickey Mouse warranties..
No rush to buy a extended warranty,You have 3 years 364 days and 49999miles to buy a warranty. It's always better to buy a warranty late because the warranty is prorated after 30 days after purchase even if you're under the 4/50.If you sell, total or the car is stolen, you'll get a small amount back.
The only risk is the warranty cost may rise a bit later but buying from Troy, you'll be saving around $600-$700 over dealer's $2500 cost.

Thanks for pointing that out. I did not know one can buy ext warranty right before 4/50. Wish there is Troy (or similar) facility around DC/MD area.

Out of state doesn't matter.Troy Dietrich is in MA and you call him and give him your info and credit card.In a few days you'll get the dealer paperwork of the transaction and within two the weeks, the warranty book from Toyota.
I've done it twice and it's easy. Also no sales tax if you're out of MA.
I know there's a 6/75,7/100,8/75 and 8/100 Lexus Platimum warranties. The RX 7/100 was $1730 and the 8/100 was $2075.I don't know about the cost now but they may be the same or very close.
If I keep the RX,I'm probably going to eventually go with an 8/75 for around $1370 which works for us.

The general rule (a variety of sources) is that extended warranties are not worth the cost - they are there to make more $$ for the dealers. That being said, I still purchased two years additional warranty for peace of mind

I've purchased extended warranties on all three of my RXs. The first two paid for themselves with a few repairs - a/c compressor, O2 sensors, various switches and the like. I imagine one repair on the 450h could make getting an extended warranty look like a bargain.

For maintenance, your dealer's website should have the maintenance costs posted under service. Use that to calculate the costs beyond the first year and make sure you know exactly what is and isn't covered. I'm not sure what tire protection covers so I can't comment on that. Good luck.
