Hi,

Can someone help me understand how wide the new RX is at its widest point, INCLUDING the side view mirror? I've found the width not including the mirrors.

I'm buying a new house and looking to buy a new RX as well, but need to be sure the car will fit. I did some rough measurements at the house and it looks like I have between 84"-87" (need to measure a little more closely) between a beam at the front of the garage and the garage door. I'm wondering if that will be wide enough.

The car is beautiful, by the way. Would love tips on how to get a good price on one...

since you already know the width of the RX excluding mirrors, just measure the mirror only, multiply by 2, and add to the width of the RX. for extra precaution, add an extra inch or two for more leeway. good luck!

Do you think that will really provide an accurate measurement?

You're assuming that the maximum width of the car, as measured by their provided dimensions, is at at the mirrors. What if the maximum width is further back on the car?

I'm thinking (hoping) that the reported width of 74.2" is actually further back on the car, so that the the width at the points where the mirrors are is less. If that weren't the case, then assuming 7" mirrors, we're looking at a width of 88.2", which would be too wide for my new garage.

Anyone more knowledgeable about this have any thoughts?

why don't you ask your salesman for the exact measurements, i'm fairly sure he would be able to tell you (he wants your commission, so he's gonna help you find out).

but my gut feeling is that if my estimate is too big for you, then the RX is probably too large. have you factored in enough space so that you can open/close your doors for you to get in/out of? you'll need at least 1 foot each side of your RX unless you are extremely skinny.

Okay so I am assuming its that width with the mirrors folded in. So we need a member to measure it with them out if possible.

Come on! You should push Lexus to produce the auto-folding feature vehicles to all the Lexus... You know how hard to get this feature installed in N.A?!

Appreciate the thoughts... and would definitely appreciate it if someone could tell me what kind of width the RX with mirrors is.

The current owners park a 2004 Volvo XC70 (73.2") and a 2009 Mercedes E series (71.7"). So the RX is 74.2", which is a little bit bigger. Yes, they are much wealthier than us. So I'm hoping I can actually pull this off.

I only had my 2nd grader available to help....given that, the width at the mirrors is about 86 inches. Would pad an inch just for variances due to the little kid factor, but measured 4 times with about the same 86". If your max clearance is 87", that's too close for my comfort.

and that's before opening the doors to get in/out (which i've already pointed out above).

pb2: these are the only choices you have:
1) buy a different house with a larger garage
2) buy a smaller car
3) tear the old garage down, and build a bigger one (subject to your municipal zoning and construction by-laws)
4) park your RX outside

It's the door and a pole in the middle that is a concern, not the garage itself. So I'm not worried about being able to open the door once I'm inside, since there's plenty of room inside the garage. Just getting into the garage through the front that is of concern.

I agree that 86 inches is tight. I'll probably try to get someone to drive the RX down to the house and see if it fits before buying it. I imagine I can always fold in the driver's side mirror before entering the garage, but that might get old fast.

Another option is to go with a used 2009/2008 RX, which is narrower.

Odd... When I look at the brochure, the implication is that the total length including the mirrors is 74.2". But that doesn't jive with what the previous poster and his 2nd grader measured.

If you look at the diagram, those measurements are only to the outside of the wheels and don't include the mirrors which stick out beyond that. I just tried to measure, but I didn't have anyone to help me. My measurements came pretty close to the 86 inches.

Longshot but maybe call your salesman/dealer and have a loaner come to the house? I am sure they would do it if you would buy a RX from them soon.

Yeah, they have offered to do that for me. Problem is that I have a to wait a few weeks till I have access to the house. Maybe that's just what I'll have to wait for though!

I went on to the Lexus website and set up a chat to ask Lexus corporate about the RX width. I'm confused about why their numbers would be different from what you guys are empirically measuring:

LSqu: I verified with a product specialist, the 74.2 inches on the RX is with the mirrors extended, not folded in.
