Snow tires for RX

I run them November to March in the stock 18" size, I think it's 235/55/18?
I tried to find a used set of stock 17" wheels to use for the snow tires but they are hard to find at a reasonable price around here. Ended up with a used set of the 5-spoke 18s off eBay.
As expected, the snow tires are a huge improvement over the stock Michelin all seasons in the white stuff.

I do (don't have any choice, where I'm living 
). It's my 2nd set of Nokian: Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 SUV, 225/65/R17 (no studs, same with the Hakkapeliitta 5 I had, before). Best tires for (real) winter

Bring this back up. If you have the stock 17"(225/65/17). Would you go down to 16" for winters? I usually do, but found a thread here about 16" rims and the only reply was no.
In theory 225/70/16 would work. But will 16" rims clear the calipers?
