Default help identify part of my exhaust and help with cat

So I am used to classic american vehicles, and now I find myself working on a 2004 RX330. Just after the 2 into 1 pipe there is a small ( oooo 9" long maybe) thing on my exhaust I don't know what it is? Lexus part number is 17420

Is its a cat or a resinator?

My front two cats are bad ( it threw the code and than I measured the heat on both sides for input and output ) the dealer said I have 3 but the shop i took it to to comfirm its the cats said I only have 2.....?

Seems kind of early for the cats to go out... what should I look for so I dont replace the cats any time soon?

Thank you

Welcome to Club Lexus, baker819.

Were you getting any error codes thrown? We have had a few reports about bad CATs, however, you are correct in that it is a bit early for yours to have gone bad. Usually O2 sensors before the CATs.

Like many topics here at CL this has been discussed previous. You need only to use the search tools available to find the existing threads, such as:

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...hip-screw.html

Also, Sewell Lexus of Dallas is a supporting vendor of Club Lexus. We like to point to their site when referencing parts.

As for your questions, I think you are just asking about the middle muffler. Not a CAT. You have two CATs if memory serves me correct. The details are in the first URL above.

Thanks for all the help. I did try the search engine... I got some answers for the secondary question but could not find answers for the primary one. Granted only spend 30 mins looking. The secondary question was kind of a bonus if some one had any thing to add. Either way thank you

You have 3 cats. Two in each manifold and one after they join. This is a redundancy that helps emissions if one cat goes bad or two go bad.

That is right, of course. Thanks for the correction. Three (3) CATs, two (2) part numbers. Had it correctly referenced in the URL I told the OP to reference with all the details.
