Hi I'm looking to buy a 2006- 2008 Lexus rx 350 or 400h and am wondering which model is the best out of these? Also want to know if I buy a trailer hitch for these do I need a prep package? I would most likely not be towing more than 2000 pounds and want to know if I could add on a trailer prep package if I need it to a used lexus?

While you could tow up to 2000 lbs. without the Towing Prep Package, many of us here at CL urge against it. Sure, a hitch for a bike rack or other similar smaller items. The transmission cooler and enhanced radiator are considered essential for any towing needs for the 2nd Generation RX by many. Also, those equipped with such will also have the appropriate junction converter box already installed for any connections for trailer lights. This is lacking in those without the package and is somewhat a pain to install after the fact.

Ok how much would it cost to upgrade all the parts needed to tow? And which would be better to tow a 350 or 400h?

I tow a 3000 lb boat with my 400h. I have also towed a 2000 lb cargo trailer from FL to CA and back again. The hybrid is surprisingly good as a tow vehicle. The electric motors allow me to idle up the boat ramp with very little pressure on the gas pedal. The brakes are strong and do not get hot (they are still original at 100k miles). The rear suspension is stiffer than a 350 as it needs to support the battery pack.

Acceleration is great off the line and also at higher speeds. The hybrid has a lot of grunt for towing and passing. I just press the gas and it goes without a lot of drama.

Most AWD 400s have the tow prep package. It is pretty easy to look in the drivers side vent below the fog light. The cooler is right here.

Is there any reliability problems if I want to buy a 80k plus 400h is there anything I should keep an eye out for?
