the shop began by admitting that it won't look the same as the original. He sent some before and after pictures of his customer. it is noticeable, but i think it's good enough for $175 so long as it wont tear in the same spot for 5 years.
Apparently, it was on the same spot as mine. Shame on you Lexus!!!!

I have a hairline fracture all along the entire instrument panel on my 2004 RX 330. I didn't notice it while test driving, the dealership salesman pointed it out as I was exiting the vehicle. Appreciated his honesty and decided to buy it anyway.
The salesman noted that this hairline fracture is very common in the 2004 RX 330 (his personal verhicle has it as well, and I saw photos of some used RX 330s with chunks missing from the IP, in this same area as well).
As the 2004 was the first year of a "major model change", some problems such as this might occurr. Perhaps the design / manufacturing process put too much stress on those corners, and over time, natural thermocycling caused cracks to mitgate from microfissures.
Problems like this should be resoved by the second year. Being a former mfg engineer for Toyota, I would think this is true. However, if these defects did not start showing up until a few years later, then perhaps 05, 06, etc may have this problem as well.
So my question is, has anyone had this cracking IP problem on any other year RXs (other than 2004)? I have owned two 300s including a 99 and an 02 - no cracks.
