A friend replaced all four brake pads for me about 8 months ago. Within hours of having the car back I got the Check Engine Light, VSC Light, Trac Off, and P0356 error code. The timing seemed odd, but I couldn't see how this could be related to the brake job, so I put in a new coil.

About a month later, another front coil failed (at least according to the error code). I replaced it. Another few months went by, and a rear coil code came on.

I dug in and replaced all 3 rear coils (huge pain, as others have noted). I also did the spark plugs at this time.

A few days ago I got the dreaded light combo plus code P0351 - another rear coil. I should note that the car definitely shakes a bit from time to time when stopped, so it does seem like it's missing. The light is also not constant, but it is on most of the time.

So at this point I'm wondering what else it could be? I have an appointment with a solid Toyota shop next week and they indicated that maybe a cheap (Advance Auto) replacement coil burned out. This could be, but it sure seems like something else is going on.

Any ideas?

Like many topics you might have questions about regarding your RX350, this one has been discussed previous. There have been a number of reports here at CL regarding failing ignition coils on early 2nd Generation RX350. There have also been notes of mixed results when using third-party replacement coils. Best to stick with OEM on these, purchasing from Toyota as needed for any price savings as these are the same as used in other 3.5L V6 engines from Toyota of the same vintage. Use of dielectric grease during the installation may help matters as well.

As I said on the other forum, Did you use original equipment plugs ie NGK or Denso iridium? If you used Bosch you are in for trouble. They are garbage and fail shortly after installing....The other thing is I use dielectric grease between coil and plug contact to reduce moisture contamination.

Thanks for the replies - the help here is amazing. I did read through the other threads, but they didn't quite address my concerns so I thought it was worth a repost.

I used Denso 3426 Iridium spark plugs. A Toyota repair shop here mentioned that he only uses OEM coils and that he has seen aftermarket brands fail very quickly. I'm willing to replace all 3 rear coils with OEM and swap out front with OEM as they fail, but I sure would like to make sure I'm going about this the right way - it's a lot of time and money.

I replaced two ignition coils three months ago. So far so good. The part came from ebay and cost only about $25.

I decided to take my chance because the failed are front coils.

Just curious, do y'all use premium or regular gas?

Follow the manufactures recommendation. The second generation RX350 is premium fuel and that is what I use.

I replaced all 3 rear coils with the latest OEM part (90919A2007) yesterday. Job was much, much easier since I left the rear passenger side 13mm bolt off the intake manifold last time. Fingers crossed that this was the issue. My Toyota mechanic said he does see aftermarket coils fail quite frequently.

I had to replace an ignition coil on my 2007 RX350 a few months ago. This week, the light came on again and it looks like ignition coil #1 is the problem. After buying an aftermarket ignition coil (Beck Arnley) that was suppose to be compatible with the car, it didn't fit so return it. I had to pay $90 from the Toyota dealership for my coil a couple months ago (90919-A2007). If I bite the bullet and just replace them all, it would cost $450 for 5 new coils.
Is there a better price out there? I can't seem to find them sold in multiple packs. I do see them sold in multiples of 3 & 6 but the model #is 90919-A2002.
Any suggestion on where to buy or if I can use 90919-A2002 part?
