Default Power Steering noise

HI all,

Got a whining noise from engine compartment when i turn the steering, only when engine is cold.

Few minutes later noise is gone.

ATF fluid level ok, no leak on steering rack, power steering belt looks ok. No bubbles in PS container.

If I raised the front wheels above the ground and turn, then no noise.

Any idea?

Note: fluid was low before this due to a pipe leak, pipe changed and cold starting noise occurs.

Thanks...

It sounds like your pump is going bad. With that said I read on another forum that is could be your belt...here is a way to checl:

"Here's a simple test. Buy an aerosol can of brake cleaner, install the little plastic extension nozzle, open the hood with the engine off and find a safe way to spray the aerosol on the ribbed side of the belt. Make sure clothing, fingers, etc., won't get caught in the belt. Start the engine, and while you're hearing the squeal, spray the aerosol on the belt. You can try this on both sides of the belt. If the squeal stops instantly, then restarts several seconds later, the noise is being generated by belt slippage. If there's no change in noise, the problem more likely is associated with one of the belt-driven accessories."

hi thanks for the reply. The whine only come on when i start to turn the steering. Its quiet when engine is running without turning the wheel. Will this eliminate the belt? Since belt is running as soon as engine is started.. Will try flushing the fluid...

Which fluid are you using? Lexmex, myself and others have been using Mobil 1 ATF without problem. FWIW. Just make sure what is available in your area is DEXRON compatible.

I would say you need to do to things:

1. Flush the system with new ATF.
2. check for a leak near the inlet hose and beyond. Air in the system can also cause this whine too. Check the clamps, etc.
3. If still a whine, add some stop-leak but I am not sure how safe it is on our cars - I dont want it to ruin your pump. My guess is it should be fine.
4. Get new pump.

Hi,

I found Wynn or Lucas for stop leak (I am across the pond in the UK). Which one is good for the RX?

stop leak works like additive right? Not replacing the fluid...
