Default Crankshaft Pulley

Hello,
I have a 2005 RX 330 that has 93,000 miles. Recenlty, I heard a noise under my hood so I took my car to have it checked out. I was informed the crankshaft pulley had completely come apart. I was also told since the crankshaft pulley came apart it's possible it affected the water pump and the timing belt. These two needed to be replaced. My question could the malfunction of the crankshaft pulley affect the water pump/timing belt?

Thanks

Can the crankshaft pulley affect the timing belt and water pump?

Something of this sort happened to Carver`s RX330. There is a recall for this pulley thing. did you go to a Lexus dealer?

Yes, I went a while ago and the part was not in. Lexus is now going to have my car towed to have it replaced.

Sorry I posted this under the wrong generation. Lexus is having the vehicle towed to their location. However, I was told the timing belt/water pump needs to be replaced due to the breakage. I have 93000 miles.

The crankshaft has a key which holds the timing belt gear locked (rotation wise) with the crank shaft. The Key extends into the crank-shaft pulley (providing the same rotational lock). The pulley is then held in place by a bolt. Once you remove the bolt, you have to slide off the pulley and slide off the timing gear.

Depending on the damage (broken or about to break etc.) the important diagnoses is did the key remain in place and the timing gear slip. IMHO it is very unlikely that the key gave-way or the timing gear slipped off .... (your timing belt cover would have been destroyed). If the pulley is cracked (not disintegrated ,,, you would have seen serious damage) then all you need is the pulley. If the dealership wants to do the replacement for free, go for it ... I would not shell out any $$ (yes two digits) for any additional work.

If you dont know how shafts and keys work ,,, the simplest analogy I can give you is that the studs on the wheel provide the rotational lock, while the lug nuts keep the wheel from coming off.

I did have this issue and the dealer replaced everything but the water pump. My car only has 76k so they did nor recommend replacing the pump as it was undamaged. This work was paid for by Lexus because the part failed.

Thanks guys! The dealer is replacing my timing belt. That saves me some money so I'm cool. 😊

At 93k you might consider ponying up for the water pump as long as they are in there.
