Headlight Lens Issue
Gentlemen
My headlight lens' were fading a little bit, so, being a gearhead, I figured I could clean these myself; especially with the new technology. Long story short, I now have small, fine scratches that have dulled the finish in some areas. have I ruined my lens' or can they be saved?
Thank you in advance,
Knucklehead

they make some commercial kits with a little buffing wheel to fix that, somebody said they use 1000grit wet sandpaper and than wax them after wards, but I dont know about that one.....

The Rain-X Headlight Restoration Kit??
There are quite a few out there. You might have tried any of the following as well:
3M 39008 Headlight Lens Restoration System
Meguiar's (PlastX) Headlight and Clear Plastic Restoration Kit
Turtle Wax's Headlight Lens Restorer Kit
Sylvania Headlight Restoration Kit
Mothers PowerBall 4Lights Headlight Restoration Kit
If you already tried one of the restoration kits you may need a professional to take a crack at it. Perhaps if nothing more than the need for a higher speed polisher or a more skilled hand.

Well, the kits are not that bad. Do not knock you for trying. Would have been my first choice. I might have used the 3M kit. Like their products over the years. However, if you tried one and did not get the result you desired then you have to rethink the problem. Why did it not work out? Was it the kit? Was it the problem with the lens in the first place? Was it the human factor? Two people could work on the same problem with the same kit and get two different results. Perhaps no matter which kit you tried you might have ended up with the same result due to the nature of the problem.
If not too bad, most any body shop should probably not have any trouble cleaning up the lenses. They have more tools, chemicals and compounds for the job. I think Maaco is always running a 50% off coupon on headlight restoration.
Due to the moisture problem the RX is prone to having mine are dirty on the inside. My only real solution was to purchase a new set of lenses to drop in first opportunity.

It theoretically is possible to clean up the damage as long as you know what you are doing. I doubt you made it irreversible considering I sanded off layers in the inside of a headlight to remove lines for a retrofit. The plastic is fairly thick. Post a picture if you want better suggestions or an alternative to buying a lens or replacement headlight
