I have the same issue...
'08 out of warranty and garage kept.

Has anyone had luck getting a response out of Lexus? How can this be heat related? If it's an electrical issue, then this could be a big deal..

When one of these is found, it would be good to have it analyzed to see if there was an electrical issue behind it. Would more than likely be easy to determine through inspection of the parts taken off the vehicle.

If you have it repaired, I would ask for the parts back. This is not a warranty repair, at this time, so there is no reason for them to hold on to the parts.

So, what is the problem? Does wiring behind it get hot (short) and melts the rubber cover? Has anyone actually removed the rubber piece and checked to see if there are wires with burnt plastic indicating a short . Sounds pretty serious to me. Jamie

Smile Lexus Reimbursed the cost of the entire repair

Our car was out of warranty as well. We simply contacted Lexus of Jacksonville. After the repair was made and we paid for it, Lexus promptly sent us a check for the full cost. The most excellent service and follow through we have experienced. We are completely thrilled with the customer care we received.

Did ever wrote to TOYOTA on the sticky melting condition, they don't seem to be keen in talking about it. I gave them some suggestion, no reply from them. As I believe neither they want to admit it or discuss about it. Save the Environment by using less PLASTICS, the more damagedparts the more plastic needs to be changed. The sticky melting is around for many years.

Sewell sells this individual piece. Not too expensive so I'm going to make a DIY out of it

How did the project go? Any tips, or better yet, a YouTube video?

Unfortunately I didn't document this DIY (have since sold the GS) but the only tip I can give is to splice the wires (as opposed to taking apart the trunk lid to disconnect the plug). I tried for about an hour to take apart the trunk lid but was not sucessful.

The rubber cover on our switch has been sagging since we picked up the RX in March. Just last week one side tore free.
I don't think there is a heat problem related to electricity....most likely the wrong type of rubber for longevity.

Anyway, I ordered a new switch from Sewell (CL price is just $48.89), and when I get back in town, I will document the install and post-up a decent "how-to".

I got it replaced at sewell lexus $238.70 called lexus customer care same day and within 24 hours they had a customer care rep manager call me back and issue me a refund check from lexus not sewell. I was told at this time lexus has been replacing this item left and right and are very aware of the issue. I think this is why i was send a refund check for my part and install.
