Yes it does immediately. - Edit: actually I tested more today and it makes the same sound in neutral as well. I am probably derailing the thread as I have mentioned I have a gs350, but anyway there is my result. Not sure how to get the dealer to actually fix it though.

Not sure if there is anything for them to fix. How does the transmission act otherwise?

I tested more today and actually the sound doesn't change at all when shifting to neutral. Still there. Does that tell us anything?

It means that gearing just moved to a lower priority in the list of likely candidates - and since, IIRC, your whine is tied to speed, and my experience with "whine" and "bearing" is usually in the same sentence with "gear", and since gear is no longer my top concern - I'd widen the area of search.

Have you considered purchasing an extension cord and sticking the microphone from your cell phone in areas of suspect?

Have you conclusively ruled out tires? (I would have bet a week's pay that a front wheel bearing was about to self-destruct based upon a loud growl at mid-to-low speeds. It disappeared the instant new winter tires went on; and resumed the instant the summer tires went back on. I was humbled by that mis-diagnosis.)

Hm... I looked up wheel bearing noise and it is described as a helicopter or playing card shuffling noise... mine's nothing like that. More like blowing over a bottle opening - that kind of whistle or whine sound.

Two of the benefits of aging into Senior Citizenship are: 1) you can likely afford a garage with a floor clean enough to pinpoint oil leaks in failing components; and 2) Tinitis and short-lived hearing aid batteries mask noises that evaded diagnosis when you were younger.

A good working knowledge of mechanical things is a curse; while

A good audio system is a blessing.
