Default Someone tried stealing my Lexus

While visiting some old friends someone tried to break in my RX350.

I had this vehicle less than a month and now I have to take this back to the dealer. I'm contemplating if I should report this to my auto insurance and have them pick up some of the tab or just straight out of pocket. Not sure besides the door cylinder if anything else will need to be replaced.

I'm sure this won't be a one day job. Anyone have any suggestions beside leaving a pit pull in the car?

Reporting to the insurance company would depend on your deductible.
Did they manage to get inside the car? What happened and how did you find out (alarm, neighbor etc)?

They were not able to get in the car as far as I can tell. Nothing open, nothing missing. I left the car parked on the street over night and walked over to it this afternoon and saw the handle. I called the police to file a report. I have a 1k deductible so that's why I'm on the fence.

By the time I notice this the dealership were closed. I plan to call around tomorrow, but I wanted to know if they could just replace the door handle or would they have to replace every lock that uses this key, meaning glove box and ignition key?

Man, sorry to hear that friend. I do think it is possible for the dealer to order key specific handle lock cylindars. Let us know what you find out friend.

Are you able to lock and unlock using the key? Replacing all the locks and reprogramming the keys at the dealer = $$

For now, that is the only way I can gain access to the vehicle via the button remote.

The key will no longer fit in the cylinder. I was so getting use to rolling the windows up this way when exiting the car.

The good news is that I went to a dealer and they were able to fix the cylinder of the door handle. They had the part, made it so that I could use the same key and reprogramed the remote to work with the cylinder.

Here's how it looks now. They had the cylinder but didn't have the cap to go over it. I called another dealer and they didn't have it either. I'll call around to a few more places and if not I'll see if I can order it myself.

I'm just hoping this is not an invitation for folks to pick at it.

The dealer told me I had 2 options, to get a second set of keys just for the door and that would be $308 (didn't mention if the keys came with it) or that I could use the same key but to cut and program it would be $411. I had a $75 discount coupon from their website on any service over $200 so I went with the option of using the same keys.

^^ Very good, looks like the solution turned out to be much less than your deductible

Yes, I'm glad that it was cheaper than my deductible, but I just paid my insurance premium. I use to be a long time believer in not using your insurance (the days of only carrying liability) but now I no longer avoid using it.

But it looks as though I may have to go back to the dealer. When I remove the key, the steering while is not moving back to the dash and the alarm is not coming on. Now I have to use the key to lock the door.

Surprisingly the dealer called me yesterday and told me they had the cap. When I spoke to the rep he told me that it would be about $10 to $12 but when I went to the dealership parts dept and he just said here and handed me the part, the service area will put it on for you.

I just walked out with the part and put it on myself.
