Negotiating on a CPO RX350
#32
So regarding negotiations, the Lexus dealer has the 07 RX 60k, AWD, navi, CPO, flint mica/blk 60k miles maint done, fully dealer serviced, 1 owner-personal car. Their list was 27.8, I got them down to 26.4k (including any dealer/doc fees, temp tags) plus TTL. There are a few scratches (that they said they would try to buff out), and there is a small tear on the leather (on the back passenger door trim) that the manager said they will let me know if they will get a leather specialist out, or sell as is. The tear is most concerning for me. Thoughts on this guys?
The thing is, I can find non nav, non dealer maintained, and they slap on a CPO status, for like $1.5k less...but a fully dealer maintained car is important to me.

Get the CPO for an additional $1.5K you will not be sorry.

At 60,000 miles, knowing that the car was fully dealer serviced is of value, as is having the NAV that you want. I don't use the back seats much at all, so a small tear back there would not concern me. Also, I think that there are leather repair kits (sometimes called "experts") that can work pretty well, especially when the defect is not in a conspicuous area (and extra especially if the leather is black).
With CPO and all the other goodies, including the cool flint mica, I think the car looks like a good buy at your price.
If you are looking for encouragement or some positive reinforcement, here it is.

A bit late here, but I just bought my 09 CPO with NAV and 27k miles. It was listed at $35,995. I bought a 30 day membership to Galves to gauge trade in and retail prices and made a spreadsheet of pretty much every 09 under 30k miles with NAV within 100 miles of Chicago. I offered $31,000 he said we weren't even close, went back and forth for about an hour and we left. In the parking lot he said he could do $32,000 and I said $31,500 and I'll drive it home. He "talked" to his manager and agreed at $31,500.
I took advantage of the 1.9% financing and the finance manager asked if I wanted to remove the CPO and save $900. We decided to go with it, but that is this dealers "price" for CPO. In the market it seems to add closer to $2,000 to the price as opposed to a non-cpo similar vehicle. Note you can ask and see exactly what they did for CPO. Mine in addition to the normal inspection had 4 new tires and new floor mats.
It was mentioned earlier about the colors affecting the price and this is definitely true. Ours is Smokey Granite Mica/Black and it's the color we really wanted and definitely brought a premium over some other colors.
Here is a pic right before we drove off

CPO is the way to go. Upon full inspection of the car, I noticed condensation in the passenger headlight (thanks to CL, I familiarized myself with the big "bugs" of the 2RX. The sales rep replaced it with a new one immediately, no questions asked. Buying a CPO car is totally worth it, IMHO.

Update: Well, the day after I got back, I noticed curb rashes on 3/4 wheels. This issue wasn't disclosed before I went to go see the car, and the internet manager didn't point it out to me when I was there. I was also focusing on other things of the car, i.e. scratches, condensation of headlight which I pointed out, and had replaced under warranty, and test driving the car. The scratch that the internet manager described on the car was quite misleading, which made me do focus on everything else, but it looks like I missed inspecting the wheels. The internet manager said that the car is sold "as is", but offered that I would get a "discounted rate for reconditioning of wheels at a cost the dealer wasn't going to pay". I responded in a lengthy email that the car was sold CPO, not "as-is" and this issue should have been disclosed to me, and reconditioned. I said driving 800 miles+ roundtrip for a "discounted rate" is totally not acceptable. I'm awaiting their response to this email.
I'm pretty upset that the dealer wasn't honest in disclosing this before driving down 8 hrs each way. I also didn't get a customer copy of the CPO check list which should have came with the sale (I've asked them to mail me my copy of this). This particular lexus dealership has received "the elite of lexus" award almost every year, so theoretically they are supposed to have quality service. Any advice? I guess there I can contact corporate as a last resort if the dealer doesn't fix the issue. Anyone have a similar issue? What happened as the solution? Thanks for the help guys

Do you have anything in writing from them that says it was CPO? If you do, make a copy and fax it over to the sales manager with a calm message stating what was promised was not what was delivered. Don't part with the original.
If you do not have anything that says CPO you will have a harder time making a case.

Shame the dealer is not closer. I would suspect such a call placed while at the dealership and in front of the Internet Sales Manager and others would be quite interesting viewing.

I would have been there first thing in the a.m. if I were local. It's unfortunate that the car was greatly not as described. But, the service history was great, it is CPO, and I forgave them for the one false description of the scratch on the car. Curb rashes on most of the wheels is added insult, and I won't tolerate it. I'm pretty upset about the whole situation, and the email the internet manager sent yesterday saying the car was sold "as-is".
