Default Evil smell at 90?

I'm on a road trip driving through the back roads of south Texas and a lot are two lane with 70mph speed limits. This means passing is to be accomplished as rapidly as possible so bursts up to 90 are just good sense.

The first time I did it i noticed a "rotten egg" smell in the cabin which I attributed to the vagaries of the road and it passed in a few minutes. Then I did another 90mph pass and there was the smell again, obviously tied to my car.

There are no codes, the car performed beautifully, just the smell under hard acceleration. I'm running premium and I put in a bottle of Berryman's B12 injector cleaner for the trip.

I have never heard of something like this. Is the o2 about to fail and the acceleration overloaded the cat? Very strange, I'm driving back Sat and if this requires attention guess I can try to find a Toyota dealer somewhere.

Default Carver, I do not suspect you have an engine issue, though I would

....I would definitely check the belts to make sure you do not have any belts rubbing raw and causing the smell, though this is unlikely.

If I were you, my major concern would be with the transmission. You said when you accelerate hard, you get the smell. My guess is you could have a clutch plate burning a bit, or a issue with your over drive engaging / disengaging.

I would certainly check my tranny fluid levels first. Next I would smell the tranny fluid. If it smells like burnt almonds, or burnt sulfer, you may have an issue friend.

If that is the case, and you notice burnt fluid, dark fluid, or low fluid, I would certainly have the tranny checked.

Also, check your tires for uneven wear, though that would be extreme to cause the smell.

My money is on tranny issue, though it may not be serious.

Catalytic converter. It may need replacement soon. That injector cleaner probably made it work a little harder. If it doesn't throw any codes I wouldn't worry about it. If you have to do a smog check then I'd replace it.

The trans fluid was changed in March and checked at Sewell on Monday when they did the inspection sticker which includes exhaust analysis BTW.

I think it was the Berryman's B12, I noticed after a fill up it was almost odor free today. We'll see how it does on the way home tomorrow with completely fresh gas.

Perhaps those cats needed a good heat cycle as well.

What is that?

It did it again today on the way back. It doesn't do it at 80, just when I hold 90 for a second or two. Guess I need to stop doing 90.

Mileage was good!

When the Cats get hot, or sometimes too hot, they are no longer efficient as they can be at lower temps. My guess, if it is not the tranny, is that you have a cat issue as the gentlemen above stated. At that speed, you are dumping a lot of gas into the combustion chambers and running at a high temp thus causing the cats to have to work harder. Not sure, but at that speed you may be "over working" the cats a bit. If it doesn't make the smell at 80 or less, or doesn't throw a code, I wouldn't worry about it.
