I just moved from a 2004 Highlander Limited 2WD to a RX400H AWD. First off about the only thing the Highlander has on the RX is a bit more cargo room in the trunk. We have a Prius so I am already familiar with the hybrid thing. The 2wd highlander got 14-16mpg in my hilly city and about 22-26 on the highway. The RX gets 22-25 in the city (lots of hills) and 24-28 on the highway and is a rocket relatively speaking. RX can do about 30mph on batteries on the flats.
For comparison sake I had 2 weeks in a Chevy HHR rental (4cyl 2wd) and the computer read out never made it past 14mpg not did my calculations so both the highlander and the RX were much better. Little 4cyl wasn't having fun on the hills.
If you do lots of stop & go or city driving the hybrid is awesome and the boost in power is a lot of fun.
Hope that helps.
