i reset it via my obd II scanner. it just helps the motor adjust to something different a little faster. i.e going from 87 octane to premium,or visa versa i reset the ecm. is it rally necessary? not really,just something i prefer to do.

Reconfigure what? I guess if you are switching from high octane to low octane this might help, but switching from synthetic back to conventional or vice versa?

The engine has knock sensors that may or may not be retarding the timing if the lower octane is causing knock, but there is no sensor that can tell if you're running synthetic oil or conventional oil..

Okay rcy,what I`m saying is:I have run Synthetic,and conventional oil in my current RX as well as the 01 RX I had prior. I have noticed when going back to conventional oil after using Synthetic,the motor is a little doggy. Not much,but enough to notice a difference (which in time,will re adjust itself). I simply reset the ecm after the oil change,but before I start the vehicle,and then it runs fine.BTW,I dont do this when switching from conventional to Synthetic. As I mentioned above ^^ do you really need to do this?? no,It`s all a matter of personal preference. The OBD II system is a complex system,(much more than previous years) Do you follow me now? And when I say doggy,it`s more like not quite as responsive. Some people may never even notice a difference, I on the other hand do. Same thing applies when switching octane fuel,I do the same procedure. But I have decided to stay with the Premium fuel because it just over all runs better.

I totally understand why you would do this when switching from lower octane to higher octane (the timing might be retarded due to the lower octane causing knock) and it will eventually advance the timing when the knock goes away with the higher octane but resetting the ECM manually will result in the advanced timing faster.

I still don't get what parameter the ECM will be adjusting/resetting that is affected by conventional oil vs synthetic oil. But, if it works for you, great.
