The best way is to look under the car and you will see a few edges that are extremely close to the underbody. On mine I was able to softly hit the panel and hear the points of contact. good luck

Sorry for the additional questions, but can someone give me a better description of the 3M tape or the foam tape that is needed to fix the problem. I went by Autozone, but I couldn't locate what I would think would be needed to fix it. Also, any do I put the tape/foam around all the edges, or in a particular spot? BTW... I thought I would just by a new one from Lexus, but it's unbelievable what they want for that piece of metal...

Look at the TSB I posted in reply #11. Lexus of course wants to replace the entire fuel tank protector ($$$). All that is needed is to replace the deteriorated foam tape between the protector and the car body.

I decided to do this today and I foind it extremely difficult to get under the car. Did you put the car up on racks, or did you remove the cover and add tape while it was on the car?

You have to lift the car on stands, that's the safe way anyway. Or use ramps, however also use chocks. Safety 1st.

Use foam pipe insulation
five years ago I simply bought a one foot piece of foam pipe insulation that is already pre slit. Cut it to fit around the side facing the front on the plastic cover. Secure with some duct tape. Problem solved. No noise since then. Btw no need to jack up. Just lay on the ground and reach under the car to apply it. Ten minute job.
