Has anyone dropped the pan to change out the transmission filter? Cannot find any information on its replacement interval.

Default Transmission fluid change at 60k for a 2007 RX350

I own GS350 AWD and car manual in transmission specification section says Drain and Refill 2.9 qt. for my car. Weirdly enough I called my dealer before draining to ask how many qt do I really need, the answer was 1.6 qt! What a BS!!! So I went and purchased 4qt before changing just to be on the safe side, surely enough tranny drained 3.3 qt and thats how much I pumped back into it. The question at the end of the day is still why would manual have the specs (although not precise) for tranny oil change if supposedly it is design to last a life time?

Even WS transmission fluid should be changed according to Lexus if the vehicle is used for towing. Should be stated in the Owner's Manual.

Farcry,
If you plan to keep the car to 200k miles then the 100k flush along the t-belt, water pump etc etc is where I would personally change it.

Regards,
I'm not going to change the timing belt in my '07 RX350 ... it doesn't have one. I personally think the timing chain is noisier than a timing belt (which I had in my 2001 RX300), but it does save you $1K on scheduled maintenance.

My wife 85K miles 08 RX350 AWD use WS fluid (5-speed Auto). Drain and refill every 30K miles. $11.99+tax per quart at the dealership but I usually buy them at ebay at ~$9-10 per quart. it takes about 4 quarts per drain and refill and my mechanic only charge me $60 labor.

My 08 Avalon use the same WS fluid (6-speed Auto). ~85K miles on it now and should do a drain and refill at 90K miles, my mechanic whom has work for Lexus and Toyota for the last 10 years said just do a drain and refill every 30K miles should be fine. He said they seldom do FLUSH at the dealership.

I just asked my independent to drain and fill ('07 RX 99,000 mi) and I must say I do think it has made a difference. Feels smoother. He told me my fluid was discolored, not terrible, but discolored.

And when I began talking about the sealed system and the "lifetime" fluid, he smiled and said yeah, there's really no such thing as lifetime. You may drive it forever, but not likely. Me being a person who never buys anything with less than 70K on it to begin with, I need to change stuff like this...

Be sure to pay some attention to the power steering system and its DEXRON II/III ATF. Believe that goes more neglected than the transmission.

I just did a drain and fill on the transmission fluid yesterday. It's easier than an oil change.

When i first did it at 80k, it made a difference. The shifts are smoother for sure. Now i have 92k...second drain and fill...even smoother. I'm doing it again in 30k.

How do you do the drain and fill on a '08 RX 350 with the sealed transmission? I thought only the dealership or someone who can measure the temp of the fluid and all that could do it. From what I've read on different posts and sites it sounded too complicated to attempt myself. I'd love to know how so I don't have to mess with the dealership.

After reading the discussion on Bob is the Oil Guy about WS fluid. I'm still not convinced Toyota WS is a full synthetic.

It still has drain/fill plug. It is sealed because tranny fluid does not leave tranny to get cooled but coolant comes to tranny to heat/cool the fluid. Also there is no dipstick

Thanks alchemist, so the transmission cooler thats on my RX ( left front side )has coolant in it, not ATF? Then I can't do a transmission flush via the coolant lines or T-tech flush. Without a dipstick how do you tell if the fluid is low ? ( I've been wondering that since I bought the car )

I did a 3x drain and fill with Toyota ATF on our '07 RX350 when we purchased it with 70K miles on it. You never really know how the previous owners drove it, so I did not want to take a chance! I did another at 100K, and will probably do another at 120K when I do the 120K service. It is easy and cheap insurance to keep the tranny going as long as possible. Of course, our '07 has a dipstick so it is pretty easy to perform this procedure.

On my 08 it still has a dipstick. Make sure you get the washer/gasket for the drain plug. According to the manual, tranny drain and fill takes 3.7qt. It took me about 40 mins for the tranny and oil change together. I used toyota ws so i don't have to worry about it. I'm changing it again in 30k anyways.

On my bmw and 4runner, they don't have a dipstick so it was quite a pain in the a$$ to change the fluid. Had to get the temp up, shift gears, pump the fluid in, etc, etc.
