Why my Rx330 gets crappy mileage
I bought this rx330 04 last year, used with 50k on it 1 owner car, i only get around 15/17 in mixed driving while goes to max 18 highway if i drive real easy. This is a awd, synthetic oil changes and i just put brand new Michelin couple of months ago but the mileage is same. I checked adjusted the pressure everything i can think off no help.
It has 72k on it now..its primarily my wifes car and she drives like a hyper miler real slow and etc.
(i am in delaware and our city driving is not like NYC hardly ever get stuck in traffic so always moving)
I used to have another rx330 05 awd before traded it in, i used to get 18 city/23-24 highway easily without me trying hard. so what gives that was a 05 the current one is 04.?? maybe some difference there??
My Isf gets 21mpg avg mode driving daily, which i drive semi aggressively, and about 28 on the highway..
i am going to do the 80k service soon, (tune up, transmission oil change etc) hopefully that helps.
what are your thoughts guys?

this would be a pricey trial due to the fact you could not return the parts, but here goes,
oxygen sensors have a lifespan of about 100,000km (60k miles). with that said, you may not get a check engine light due to the fact that they are still working within their own acceptable range.
i am not sure how many the rx has, but it has at least 3 (i know the ford ranger has something like 5-6)
so if you factor in 3 sensors all ready a little off due to the fact they are gummed up (and no you cant clean them) and getting old, that might be your problem. because, usually, the default program runs the car rich.
conclusion, your "3" sensors could all be telling the computer to put a little more gas instead of the right amount.
oxygen sensors go for at best 100 bucks a piece, plus labour, kinda expensive to try

2005 rx330 have 4 oxygen sensors that are unique none of them can be switch to another place. A bit of a pain.
Has the service been done an all of the fluids, tranny, diff, transfer case? Friction can affect gas consumption but not that much.
Aside from air filter, which was already mentioned, have you cleaned the mass-air flow sensor? This may help.
Given the mileage have you done any of the TSB upgrades, as they should still be covered under warranty.
I hope this helps

Fellow CL members..this ain't the 80's anymore.
A dirty air filter will not make your MPG suffer. <--yes you read that right.
It will hinder performance, but today's computers, it will read the amount of air passing through the MAF sensor hence the ECU will calculate the duration the injectors will open. They also work in conjunction with the A/F sensors.
I'd check for the basics first like gas quality, dragging brakes, wheel alignment, tire press. also mentioned is cleaning the MAF sensor.
I remember seeing a TSB for A/F sensors being replaced and/or recalibrating the ECM.
Think it's an 8yr/80k coverage thing.
Don't know for sure if it pertains to your problem though.

This is an extremely remote possibility, so please don't take offense. We recently, on this forum had a person complaining of poor gas mileage. It turned out that he was driving in 4th gear instead of drive. You said you are not the primary operator of the vehicle. Is it possible your wife is moving the shift stick to 4th instead of D?

Mileage
On your gas mileage. Are you filling the tank. Then dividing the miles by gallons used? Or are you using the car display? My display is always off every time I check.
I average around 20 miles to the gallon. RX350 with FWD. Mostly city driving. What type of loss does the AWD model RX have compared to the FWD?

D is for DRIVE. 4 is for lower gear.

D I believe is also overdrive. 4 is your NO Overdrive.
