Default Air filter - broken bolts

Little did I know, the bolts are supposed to be "loosened" but they broke in half when I tried to do this on my 2007 RX 350. Therefore, after I put the new air filter in the case does not close all the way.

Has anybody done this before? Will Lexus charge an arm and a leg to secure the case tightly?

Replace the bolt, what's the worry. You might need to take the box apart to do this. And if you take it to the dealer, yes it will cost you some dough.

I should have explained further. The bottom half of the bolt is still in the air filter case, the top half pulls right out. I'm not sure if I can get the bottom part out.

I was curious if anybody ever had to pay Lexus to have this done.

I had this happen on one of my air filter bolts and they replaced it for free.

Go to your local Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a screw extractor. It a drill bit that you use with a power drill to remove broken bolts.

Yes, screw-bolt extractor will set it free! I wonder why it failed though.

I really appreciate all the replies.

I'm just going to take it to the dealer and have them check it out. I have an appt. to get the oil hose replaced anyway.

If you decide to change the air filter, I would suggest that you turn the socket wrench with little pressure to loosen the bolts. Mine were screwed on very tight, so I had to give it a good push. After 1/2 revolution, I noticed the bolt was broken.

Some idiot torqued it way up, probably from an oil change chain..like Midas, or something. Those folks have destroyed more than they have fixed.

It was a blind bolt, a pain to deal with. So this idiot got his pneumatic wrench, stuck a 10 mm extension and let it rip! A bonafide idiot! Sorry can not help it.

Went to the Lexus dealership today....they wouldn't replace the broken bolts. According to them, it would cost over $500 to replace the "air cleaner assembly".

I got some wires holding the box securely, until I can find some replacement bolts. Wow, I figured they would take care of it....guess not.

That is ridiculous. And they wonder why they're called "stealerships".

If you didn't want to use bolts, you could find some clamps that would work. My other car has clamps that just pop off without even needing tools.

Try and call the Toyota dealer, maybe they will help.
