Default 2005 RX Noise Heard Inside The Car

My friend had a noise that could be best heard from inside his Rx 2005. The car has 30K miles and the noise sounds like an old fan going bad. We thought at first it was the A/C, but we turned off the A/C and the noise didn't change. When the car was driven, the noise remained the same.

My friend parked the car at my place and came in for coffee while we talked about the noise. We concluded it had to be something not related to the engine or the frequency would increase.

When he drove home the noise that he had had for a few days was gone. It will be difficult to ask the dealer to check-out the car without hearing the noise.

So, did anyone have a similar experience with this type of symtom, and if so, what was the problem part?

Thanks for your help,
Wes

I'm working on my own mystery sound from my 2005 RX330. Maybe it's the same sound.

A high-pitch and rapid chirp or squeak is heard when the fan motor is turned on, with either the A/C or heat activated. When the system is turned OFF, the chirp/squeak spools down to a complete and audible stop. Turning it back on starts up the sound all over again.

My RX is covered by the Certified Pre-Owned warranty. I took it to Sewell Lexus in Dallas last Saturday and they executed a repair according Lexus TISB #AC001-06 (Revised). This TISB is called "Moan Sound With A/C On" and here's the description:

"Some 2004 – 2006 RX 330 owners may experience a moan noise heard at 1100 rpm to 1400 rpm with the A/C ON. Production changes to the discharge hose and clutch hub have been implemented to prevent this problem. This service bulletin provides a procedure to improve this condition."

Unfortunately, even after the warranty repair, my sound returned after I got home so I got back on the phone and gave my Sewell service rep the bad news. Obviously I've got a separate problem. I'm now waiting for him to talk to the repair team and call me back.

I even recorded the sound just in case it no one believes me. ;-)

Stay tuned.

Just had my 2005 RX330 repaired with the same "A/C Moan Noise" problems by a Lexus dealership in Roseville, CA.

TSIB AC001-06
Parts: 88703-48140 HOSE Sub-AS 0, 88403-28030 Hub Sub-ASS 3
Cost: Labor $414 + Parts $228 = $642

(The repair was covered by the Certified Pre-Owned warranty)

I left the car with the dealership for 2 days, but they were not able to reproduce the noise. So, I went back to the dealership on the third day and test drove it with one of the techs. Luckily, the A/C moan noise came back after a few mins of test driving.

A few things to consider when reproducing the noise with the tech:
1) A/C must be on (Level 2)
2) Test drive the RX330 on a very quiet road
3) Slow and steady acceleration at low speed
4) Release the gas pedal, after it reached 20 to 30 mph
5) With some luck, you will hear the A/C Moan Noise (for a few seconds)

After the repair … the noise when away!!!

Good Luck.
