I think the answer to your first question is no.
There is no AUX input on the RX; this first appeared on the RX in 2010.
You have to use the adapters that send the iPod signal to the radio via FM signals or through a cassette tape adapter, both of which are readily available.

tfischer is right. 2010 is the first RX with the USB port for the iPod.
I would suggest the SoundLinQ. I had mine professionally installed in my 04 with the iPod cable hidden in the glove compartment. The SoundLinQ will display song names on the radio and all of the stereo controls are fully functional with it. If you do a search here you should find more information. Good luck.
