Default Using the Luggage Rack

I've owned my RX 330 since October of 2004 and have never used the luggage rack. I have found a need to use it and was wondering if anyone out there could share with me the proper way to secure items to it. Thanks in advance for your help.

You are not supposed to use your luggage rack. In the RX brochure, a footnote states, "Accessory roof rack with rails not recommended for luggage."

Seriously, check out this thread.

Having said that, many of us here use the rack. I haven't used mine for any heavy items. I normally use it to carry a flag pole assembly (in a canvas case). I use a two short pieces of thin rope to secure it on top of both crossbars (tied against the side rail).

What I've done with other SUVs is to buy one of those cargo nets that go over the items and hook onto the rack's rails (both the side and crossbars), similar to this:

I wasn't aware of the "not recommended for luggage" quote in the owners manual. I'm wanting to carry some Tiki torches up there, as they will not comfortably fit in the cargo area. Of course another idea would be to lay down one side of the back seat. I'm guessing that since you carry your flag pole assembly in a canvass bag, you don't experience any scratches or rubs on the roof rails. I assume if I was to use the luggage rack I should probably wrap them in something in order to prevent scratches or rubs.

How big are these torches? If they are laying on the rack, do they still come in contact with the car's finish? If not, then I wouldn't worry about scratching the rack--I don't think it scratches that easily, and if so, it would probably not be noticeable.

Otherwise, yes, just wrap the relevant sections in tarp, cloth, towels, etc.

They are about 6 feet long and very lightweight. Don't think there is a chance they could come in contact with the finish, Just the luggage rack.

I ended up just folding down one half of the back seat. Thanks for all the feedback.
