As an individual I don't give rip about fuel. Never have. BUT it's finally encouraging to see it below $3 a gallon for small businesses & big. Talk about economies of scale! Go USA.

Well, based on your numbers, you got a 15% increase in mpg while paying ~10% more for premium. I think you should run a few more tanks to see if the data holds.

That's an awesome chart. I'd be curious to see more data too! Please come back and update everyone.
I was looking for moreless people's opinions....
If Premium is "recommended"....than you have a choice...
If premium is "required"....than you have no choice....
It's like if your car doesn't need synthentic oil.....but you put it in because its better? Is it really?
That's basically what it boils down to.
I was looking at a few older RX models 06-08, it'll be a kid mobile, here there, a lot of running errands kinda car....needing to replace the againg A4 we have....so I wasn't too concerned about performance, hence why this RX would be a decent choice.
My mdx and tiguan both require premium, so I thought it would be nice for a change to use regular gas for a running around car....
Again, I don't wanna hear "its a lexus", just use premium....c'mon at the end of day, its old like a 2007 etc..., its cheap...it'd be different if it was a brand new model. which I believe those ones are "required premium" gas.

A lot of vehicles that require premium can temporarily run on non-premium and some find that they can routinely use non-premium without adverse effect.
Might be, might not be. All depends on the specifics but you are correct in that it's not simply/universally better. A car doesn't have to "need" synthetic to benefit though.

I've been alternating between Regular and Exxon/Shell Premium(93). No change in mileage.
I did reset the learning ability of my car and so far i'm not filling my tank half as much as i used to compared to when i bought my RX35 three months ago. I also removed the cross-bars from the roof-rack, and put on new tires with Nitro and i think that helped with an approximate change 19-22mi/gallon to 24-26mi/ gallon.
After resetting the ECM i stopped over-pressing the gas pedal for hard-accelerations and let the gears change at its pace. That helped too. Slightly bent the front tag on the RX to match the front fascia.

My experience has been with cars that require premium -- in those cases, I've noted a decrease in mileage when using less than premium. Since it is suggested in the RX, I'm running the same experiment to see if I get similar results.

2 weeks ago, I had put premium from like an Esso gas station....car ran like garbage!!!
I normally always go to Shell...always, even if I gotta drive out of my way....
I don't think its about people here trying to save money, I think maybe bringing better light to the "recommended" fuel vs the "required" fuel topic.
As for my conversion...I think this weekend, filled up the Vw Tiguan, with about 8th left, it was $75 dollars here...the conversion dollar would have been $66USD, but prob even less if I was filling up across the border.
I think its been a great marketing ploy for them, like someone mentioned earlier, their 2005 rx said 87 was fine, but for 2006 model year, it suddenly said 91. What could have changed? I've noticed a lot of cars from 2006+ seem to suddenly recommend the 91, so what happened in 2006, is this when the big gas companies starting lobbying more to the car manufactures........

It may also be that the manufacturers are using every trick they can to help meet the government CAFE standards for fuel economy. Both of my Lexus vehicles get better fuel economy with premium. If the manufacturers can report just a single mpg better cafe results by simply mandating premium fuel in the OM, they might be able to defer some retooling costs. A one or two MPG increase may not seem like a big deal to you and me but to the manufacturer it may translate to a good deal of money.

I have a 2005 RX (so different engine) and have found the regular fuel perfectly fine. Any sluggishness could be mainly attributed to a dirty throttle body and mass airflow sensor.
