Question HID Headlamps

I just recently purchased a 2003 RX300 that came with the standard factory headlamps. I wanted the factory HID headlamps but apparently the HID headlamps only came with Navigation equipped RX's. I asked a couple of dealers if the factory HID headlamps could be put in afterwards by the service department but was told that they couldn't. I'm assuming the dealers either aren't able to (unlikely) or aren't allowed to.

What do I need to do or what parts need to be replaced in order to replace the standard headlamps with the factory HID headlamps? Is it as simple as replacing the bulbs? Does it need an entirely different enclosure? Does some of the wiring need to be replaced? Are there fuses or other small electrical parts that should be replaced when putting in the factory HID's?

What about aftermarket HID's? Are people just replacing the bulbs? I'm actually more interested in the factory HID's but want to know what options are out there. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have the HIDs on my 2001 and frankly they are not that big of a deal. The electronics for the self-leveling feature would be the biggest issue. It is cool to see the beam go up and down when I brake and accelerate and I guess the immediate area in front of the car is somewhat brighter.

The bulbs that are on sale on ebay are apparently a simple replacement--you have to get the right ones, however. There are a lot of threads already here on the boards and this would be a good place to start.

Thanks.

There's a ton of threads on HID's and their conversion and installation. I just had to take the time to sort and read through all the relevant posts.

If you are trying to put in factory HID headlamps, you would need to change the entire housing... you would also need the power source that runs the HIDS, they run off a higher power, I do believe it is in the headlight but you might need a ballast of some sort. The autoleveling is inside of the headlight itself but that might also need some power... It's not just a simple bulb switch, that is what I did for my ES300. I have HID bulbs inside halogen projectors... yes it is definitely brighter and better spread, but to change the housing would give the best effect...
