Should the Lexus RX300 be considered a classic? One journalist makes a compelling case.

The RX300 is a milestone in the automobile history, not unlike the GTO or Mustang. Mine is 14 years old and this is a picture from a few week ago. I may never get rid if it.

I saw this article and it reminded me of this thread. To all of you that say milestone, this is actually a milestone set by the Mercedes ML class:

First RX300 was December of 1997. First ML was February 1997. So the RX300 was actually inspired by the ML, which was the true milestone.

Agree that the RX will never have that "Classic" status like a 55 T-Bird would, but the car's looks, as many have mentioned here, really shook up the industry back in 98-99. The car won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award the first year it came out. People just raved about it. Personally, I think it's looks are timeless and still very unique.
Living in AZ I know that I may eventually get a classic plate for the car once it reaches 25 years old, and it will, as this car for me is a family heirloom and gets driven maybe a couple thousand miles a year.

I loved my RX300 1999 bought new in November 1998. Other than the transmission was a great vehicle. Some of the pictures of the RX posted here are incredible. Nice looking cars,

There are similarities like 4 wheels, alternatives to minivans (we can argue 5 vs 7 ppl mover). To me the products were and are different. That does not say which is better or superior. GX line may be more apt comparison.
The way I look at the SUV market is the sales inflection point. That clearly coincides with RX availability and RX sales.

The only vehicle I test drove was an ML before falling for the RX. I distinctly remember the differences and the ML drove like a truck similar to Bronco. The RX was the most car like and at that time every one including Mercedes made fun of the shortcomings of RX in the Sport Utility category.

So I Googled the ML vs the RX.
The ML had so many complaints from owners that I didn't even test drive one. They basically said it was a terrible car all around, a true Teddy the Rough Rider (some said it was a cheap POS) while the RX had rave reviews from their owners.
Very happy I went with the RX. Thank you Google

Was the RX300 actually inspired by it though? Seems like it would be impossible to design a vehicle that is inspired by another vehicle in that short of a time, let alone rushing it into production, and having it for sale on the lots in the U.S. in only 10 months.
