Default no overdrive yet no CEL

Hi all. Strange one this.
My 03 Rx300 will not get into OD on some drives. The CEL doesnt come on and when the computer is read it shows no pending errors. Now the weird thing is that when I use my obdII to clear I get OD back immediately. Things will then be fine for a few days.
Anyone come across this? What could be wrong?

This is strange that on clearing, when nothing is set, you get your OD back.

Can you share some history ... How long you have owned the vehicle? Was any work done?

Do keep in mind that the o/d can be switched out by the driver, so it is not necessary that you will get a CEL. But that should light up the o/d off. Try playing with that switch and see what the instrument cluster shows.

You can even try disconnecting the battery to purge gremlins.

I've owned the car for 8 years. The only work done in the last two months was a knock sensor change. Did the trick and everything has been fine till this problem popped up two weeks ago. I have no CEL. As I said, when this happens I just use my phone to 'clear codes' and OD is back. Of course I have checked the OD button and it's on the ON position

Did you do the trick or the fix?

Bought one new knock sensor and did the trick. Both were out.

Since what is going on is bizarre, I can only attribute it to the non-standard setup you have. I can only suggest to install OEM knock sensors and undo the trick.

Would that guarantee a fix? I am not sure. Maybe the problem has traveled to the ECU.

I am out of ideas at this point.
