Default RX 300 hard to starts

cranks good but doesn't start good. Crank for a short time and then i've got to wait about 20 seconds and try again. could it be the fuel pump? or a electrical proble?

How many miles are on the car? Could be in need of a tune up. To break it down to basics, you need 3 things to get the engine to run. 1. Compression, 2 Spark, and 3 Fuel. If you haven't replaced your spark plugs in a very long time, this could be affecting the spark. If your fuel pump is getting weak, this could also be a problem. What I would do is 1. When you get in the car to start it next time, instead of sticking the key in and immediately cranking the engine over, turn the key just to the on position and let it sit for a few seconds. cycle the key back off, and then back to the on position. This is turning the fuel pump on. After a few times, then go ahead and crank the engine. If it starts quicker than it has been, I would suspect a fuel pump. A weak pump might not have the ability to create enough fuel pressure if you just hop in and crank the engine right away. Priming the fuel pump a few times as just described is basically giving the pump a few ignition cycles to build up the required pressure in the fuel system. Try this procedure the next few times you start the car. If you find that this is helping the car start quicker, suspect a failing pump. Also try it a few times the old way of just cranking right away. Try to develop a consistent pattern. It should be fairly obvious if this priming the pump beforehand is giving you better results. Report back and let us know if this is helping.

First a warm welcome to CL btheurer.

Adding on to an excellent post of 2GSKaizen ... you need air (Oxygen) ... these days the fuel is slave to the oxygen. Does it help to start if you have the gas pedal depressed partially? And are you getting any CEL?
