Default Spare Wheel on 'Tailgate?'

Hello everybody, due to the astronomical cost of petrol in England I am seriously considering having an autogas/lpg conversation on my 2003 rx300. As I would probably put the lpg tank in the spare wheel well I was wondering if anybody has ever come across a tailgate bracket to mount the spare wheel on the back? I would put it on the roof but mine doesn't have the roof bars and the ones I need are very few and far between on ebay.

The tail gate is hinged horizontally and the weight of spare would be too much. I would go without a spare (carry a cell phone and fix a flat can... I dont like it but it is a solution to a potential problem).

The other option would be to find/create spare on trailer hitch. Would be a hassle getting things in and out of the trunk.

Thank you for the reply - your right, the door would have to be held in the up and open position, and I would forget to hold it and sooner or later I wallop my head on the bloody thing. I heard of somebody rigging up a bracket in the boot to hold the spare upright. I suppose if I am ever towing the caravan I can throw the spare in the storage bit at the front.

I know this is a very old thread.

I remembered this thread after seeing a first-gen RX300 with a spare tire mounted on the roof racks today. The owner has a painted tire carrier. It actually looked quite good. I asked him why he had his tire on the roof. He opened the rear hatch and showed me. Wow... the entire rear area was used for car stereo stuff. I was shocked when he told me the whole setup cost him over $7000. After listening to it for a minutes, I was not so shocked. It sounded absolutely amazing. The guy *only* listens to classical music. He played the 1812 overture and it sound so life-like.
