Default Rear differential lubricant leak

1999 AWD RX300, 215K. My rear differential is quite moist with what appears to be a leaking lubricant. Can't tell where it is coming from, but appears to be from high up on the housing. Anyone with similar experience?

Check the breather.

Also, check the fill plug. Mine leaked from the fill plug after changing the fluid. Replaced the plug and all is well.

Good call; almost certainly the fill plug. Any idea what size allen wrench is required to get it out?

Go with Amsoil. I wish I had.

I went with Royal Purple, but since then having looked at many studies on gear oil. Royal Purple was near last in almost all cases. Amsoil was the leader in most, if not all scenarios. And, Amsoil is cheaper than what I paid for Royal Purple just getting it is a bit tougher.

funny I have for years wanted to switch everything to Amsoil, just cant seem to get off the dime and do it. I even thought distributing it among family to make it worthwhile. They do list dealer within your area though.

What I was really looking for was viscosity. Checked the owners manual and it says API Gl-5, 80W-90.

You may already know this ....
Undo the filler plug, before you touch the drain plug.

It will be hard to find 80w-90, 75W-90 is a good substitute (many members here use that weight).
