When you refer to the "upper mount", is that the one listed as the "suspension support" on carguy's diagram in post #2?

Also, I've heard that air tools are necessary for this job. Is that true or can I get by with normal wrenches?

Yes.

Air tools can help but are not necessary. If you plan it out you dont need an impact wrench. [Loosen the top strut nut with vehicle on the ground ,,, loosen means loosen and NOT even close to be removed].

When you use the spring compressor tool, so not use power tool.

Normal tools and a squirt or two of a PB Blaster or equivalent a night before should do it. And do not forget a good dose of caution and care.

I was taking another look at the torque values and noticed 155 ft-lb for the lower strut bracket. Doesn't that seem excessively high for a 22mm bolt?

No, it's correct. The 22mm is a fairly large bolt. Bigger than most wheel studs on trucks. And big H/D GM trucks get 140ft lbs torque on the studs.

if im replacing entire assembly, including springs, do i still need to compress spring? can i just take off entire assembly(top 3 bolts and bottom 2) then replace?

No. The entire unit including the spring can be removed in one piece.

thanks. it seems like an awful lot of work to save the springs when entire assembly isnt much more money and takes way less time, not to mention unlikely to send you to the er if done wrong.appreciate the help
