Clean the throttle body to see if it is sticking.

These cars do not have DBW so it's impossible for them to accelerate on their own because of an ECU problem. It would have to be something mechanical.

I would also check if the accelerator cable does not have any frays and is free of grime. Lot of places have a tendency to lube the cable and over time it becomes sticky. The other thing to check would be that there is a slack (1/8" to 1/4") in the cable before the butterfly wheel starts turning. [I know some folks have removed this slack].

Next task would be to see if the throttle body is free of grime. The butterfly can become sticky and not close fully/

Check engine mounts to make sure the engine is not shifting, causing the throttle cable to pull.

Salim

[Most of the unintended acc happens as the gas pedal is pressed ... not the driver is intending to do, but things like the floor mat etc make it happen]

Drivers must know and be prepared for un-intended acc. All must have a plan ... Brake, steer, shift to N, kill switch etc]

My gas pedal was sticking before I had the throttle body cleaned so as mentioned above I could see your problem could have the same cause. Cleaning it increases gas mileage 2 mpg if it was as dirty as mine, so it pays dividends to keep it clean.
