Thumbs up Successful Key Transponder Programming!

Just wanted to summarize for all, my recent positive experience with RX transponder programming.

Funny how some folks who lease cars keep all but one key as souvenirs! So I started out with one key. After reading through some searches here on CL, I found the Lexus-parts.com post about a “key sale” and ordered 3.

They just needed my VIN# and verified I owned the vehicle and immediately sent the 3 keys, cut to fit the locks. All I needed to do was program the ones with transponders (programming the transponder codes into the vehicle's ECU).

I found instructions on how to do this before my purchase by searching around CL some more and used the last, 3rd, set of instructions in the list (model not mentioned) and they worked perfectly! Just follow the steps exactly and wait for the security light to stop flashing at the end!

One more note. www.Lexus-parts.com is great to deal with. As an approved CL vender, they managed to exceed my expectations in taking care of one minor glitch on my order. I would deal with them again. Many thanks Darrel!

PS You do need one master or remote to use this process.

Thanks, ederny, I hope all goes well with the new key(s).

So, does this make all the key functions work?
Start, lock/unlock doors, and panic button?

.......................
Here are those instructions:

Programming replacement keys. 1998 and up Lexus models

-Enter the car with a working pre-programmed key and close all doors.
-Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and the accelerator pedals.
-Within 5 seconds, insert the working pre-programmed key into the ignition. Do not turn the key.
-Within 15 seconds of inserting the ignition key, depress and release the accelerator pedal 5 times.
-Within 20 seconds, depress and release the brake pedal 6 times.
-Within 10 seconds, remove the working pre-programmed key from the ignition.
-Within 10 seconds, insert the newly cut transponder key into the ignition.
-Depress and release the accelerator pedal one time. The security light should now begin flashing to indicate that the computer is reading the new key and programming the system.
-Leave the new key in the ignition for at least 60 seconds. When the security light stops flashing, the programming process should be complete
-Start the vehicle using the new key to verify that programming was successful.

That registers the code in the key with the immobilizer system. The remote functions on the key require a different set of programming instructions entirely.

i recently lost my key around campus and I am afraid that someone might walk up and take my car.

My question: Is the new key programmed to accept the ECU or is it the other way around??? I need something that changes the frequency so the person who has my old keys cant get in.

Thanks,

Kien

Good questions...

Kien, The way I understand it is the ECU learns the transponder code of the new key. There are about 10 memory slots for keys in the ECU, so you can't program in an unlimited number of keys.

Therefore, the ECU learns the codes (accepts the transponder reply code). Sounds like if you lost your key, you should gard against theft some other way (we could start a whole new thread on that subject).

Next question...
Yes, the new "non-remote" keys from Lexus-parts.com were pre cut to fit the locks (works in all of them). Once the transponder code was learned, the engine would start. Now, you are wanting to know about the remote key. Well, I'll have to get back to you on that. I wont have that til this weekend and will let you know if my original information is correct - it comes pre set to the car via the VIN#. But now, Burnished has me concerned, saying there is a different proceedure for the RX to learn the remote transmitted code. Burnished, do you know the proceedure? Do tell!

I believe there is a way to delete out all but 1 registered key, but I'm not 100% sure. I've seen it mentioned in some threads on here that also contained the information on how to add a new key(which I did successfully). As for registering the remote, I found that information on several different messages spread out on Club Lexus. I followed the steps in the messages, but I never successfully registered it. It kept giving me the code for "retry." The process for registering the key involves using the door lock and opening and closing the driver's door at the right time. It's a little more difficult than registering the code to start the vehicle. One of these days I'll get a chance to sit down and get the remote registered, but I'll wait for the warm weather first.

Default Ok, I found remote instructions...

...after a search of CL. On the LS430/400 forum, VVT-i posted these instructions for programming the remote (not sure if this works on the RX, but will give it a try):

To program your remote entry:
Make sure no key in ignition, driver door open and another 3 doors are closed and locked.
Insert the master key into ignition switch then remove it. Lock and unlock driver door 5 times( use the lock and unlock buttom at the door handle, not the master switch).
Then close and open the driver door one time.
Lock and unlock driver door 5 more times (at the door handle, same like the second step).
Then insert the master key in ignition and turn it on and then off. Remove the key. You hear the door lock and unlock itself once.
Then press the lock and unlock bottoms on the key (at the same time) and hold it for about 3 seconds.
Release both bottoms and then just press the unlock bottom for about 3 seconds and you should be done with reprogramming the remote entry.

VVT-i's origional POST.

I am adding the entire set of programming instructions from Lexus below which I've followed successfully for the Remote programming (essentially identical to the above, but calls out the options):
---------------------------

TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING

NOTE: The remote keyless entry system is equipped with 2
transmitters, having 2 unique vehicle access codes programmed
into the wireless door lock ECU.

MODES OF REGISTRATION (PROGRAMMING the Remote)

There are 4 registration modes:

Add Mode
Adds a transmitter (remote) without erasing existing transmitter
codes. Four transmitter codes can be registered at one time. If number
of registered codes exceeds 4, previously registered codes are erased
in order, starting with first registered code.

Rewrite Mode
Erases all previousLy registered transmitter codes and
reprogram new transmitters.

Confirmation Mode
Informs user of number of existing transmitter codes already
programmed in system.

Prohibition Mode
Erases all existing registered transmitter codes and cancels
wireless door lock operation. Use this function if transmitter is lost
or stolen.

REGISTRATION OF RECOGNITION CODE

1) To begin programming, remove key from ignition switch.
Ensure driver’s door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are
closed. Insert key into ignition switch, and then remove it.

2) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: press door
lock switch (the one that controls all the locks) to LOCK position,
and then within one second, press door
lock switch to UNLOCK position. Repeat procedure continuously until
door locks have been locked and unlocked 5 times. Close, and then open
driver’s door.

3) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: repeat
procedure in step 2), except for closing and opening driver’s door.

Insert key into ignition switch. To enter desired mode, turn ignition
switch to ON position and back to LOCK position (one cycle), within
one second, the specified number of times. See REGISTRATION MODE
SELECTION table below. Remove key from ignition switch. Registration
of confirmation code is complete after door locks cycle. Be sure to
continue as below.

REGISTRATION MODE SELECTION
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mode - - - No. Of Ignition Switch Cycles
Add = 1
Rewrite = 2
Confirmation = 3
Prohibition = 5
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) If any mode, other than confirmation mode is selected, go
to next step. If confirmation mode was selected, door locks will cycle
0-4 times depending on how many transmitter codes are stored in ECU.
Example: two stored codes equals 2 door lock/unlock cycles.

5) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: if add mode,
rewrite mode or prohibition mode is selected, to confirm proper
initiation, door locks will automatically cycle one time for add mode
(at the end of step 3),
2 times for rewritemode and 5 times for prohibition mode. Press
transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for at least 1.5
seconds, and then within 3 seconds, press any transmitter button for
at least one second.

6) If within 3 seconds, door locks cycle one time, new
transmitter code has been successfully accepted. Go to next step. If
door locks cycle 2 times, new transmitter code was not accepted. To
program an additional transmitter or to make a second attempt, return
to step 5) within 40 seconds.

7) Registration of recognition codes is complete under any of
the following conditions:

* Forty seconds has elapsed since wireless door lock ECU has
responded.
* Driver’s door is closed.
* Key is inserted into ignition key cylinder.
* Four recognition codes are registered at one time.

Default Re: Ok, I found remote instructions...

That seems correct. On both my keys the plastic right around the screw on the side with the L logo broke and the dealer was nice enough to get them for me for free (still waiting for the 2nd one) and let me keep the original keys.

When they were programming it I noticed the tech opening and closing the door.

Question

anyone tried this before?

what if I have a master key from another RX?

will it matter? Since this step is require turn the key in ignition.

Then insert the master key in ignition and turn it on and then off. Remove the key.

Default We have to keep our "master" and "remote" usage correct.

Master = has a transponder to deactivate the "engine immoblizer" system to start the engine. The transponder chip in the key returns a code when scanned by a signal transmitted in the dash near the ignition lock.

Remote = all of the above + has a transmitter in it powered by the battery and operated by the buttons that transmitts a signal to the vehicle via the window antenna on the read drivers quarter panel window.

So,

I would read your question as "what if I have a remote key from..."

In this case, you might try (and I'm not 100% sure it would work this way) using your own master in the ignition that operates the vehicle for that step of the proceedure. Of course, you will, once programmed, need to carry both keys, the master to operate the vehicle and the remote from the other RX that you programmed in, to open the doors remotely.

Thanks for your reply

But what I meant is, I have an original "remote" key and trying to get another remote for back up.

will these steps apply if I need to program the back up "remote" key from another RX?

Obviously, the back up "remote" key won't turn in the ignition. Can it be done with the same steps?

Talking You're in luck!

Kien,

I found, in the shop manual, what just might be the answer to your prayers.

You have several programming options and can wipe out the code from the remote key you lost!

Apperaently you can wipe out all remotes from the ECU and then relearn the one you have left over and a new one if you buy a replacement.

Here is what the manual says (I have not tried it yet):

----------------------------------------------------------

Remote (key) Transmitter PROGRAMMING

NOTE: The remote keyless entry system is equipped with 2
transmitters, having 2 unique vehicle access codes programmed
into the wireless door lock ECU.

MODES OF REGISTRATION (PROGRAMMING)

There are 4 registration modes:

Add Mode:
Adds a transmitter without erasing existing transmitter
codes. Four transmitter codes can be registered at one time. If number
of registered codes exceeds 4, previously registered codes are erased
in order, starting with first registered code.

Rewrite Mode:
Erases all previously registered transmitter codes and
reprogram new transmitters.

Confirmation Mode:
Informs user of number of existing transmitter codes already
programmed in system.

Prohibition Mode:
Erases all existing registered transmitter codes and cancels wireless
door lock operation. Use this function if transmitter is lost or stolen.

REGISTRATION OF RECOGNITION CODE

1) To begin programming, remove key from ignition switch.
Ensure driver’s door is open and unlocked, and all other doors are
closed. Insert key into ignition switch, and then remove it. Go to
next step.
2) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: press door
lock switch to LOCK position, and then within one second, press door
lock switch to UNLOCK position. Repeat procedure continuously until
door locks have been locked and unlocked 5 times. Close, and then open
driver’s door. Go to next step.
3) Complete the foJ4owing in 40 seconds or less: repeat
procedure in step 2), except~ for closing and opening driver’s door.
Insert key into ignition switch. To enter desired mode, turn ignition
switch to ON position and back to LOCK position (one cycle), within
one second, the specified number of times. See REGISTRATION MODE
SELECTION table. Remove key from ignition switch. Go to next step.

REGISTRATION MODE SELECTION

Registration Mode No. Of Ignition Switch Cycles
---------------------------------------
Add 1
Rewrite 2
Confirmation 3
Prohibition 5
---------------------------------------

4) If any mode other than confirmation mode •is selected, go
to next step. If confirmation mode was selected, door locks will cycle
0-4 times depending on how many transmitter codes are stored in ECU.
Example: two stored codes equals 2 door lock/unlock cycles.
Registration of confirmation code is complete after door locks cycle.
5) Complete the following in 40 seconds or less: if add mode,
rewrite mode or prohibition mode is selected, to confirm proper
initiation, door locks will automatically cycle one time for add mode,
2 times for rewrite mode and 5 times for prohibition mode. Press
transmitter LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for at least 1.5
seconds, and then within 3 seconds, press any transmitter button for
at least one second. Go to next step.
6) If within 3 seconds, door locks’ cycle one time, new
transmitter code has been successfully accepted. Go to next step. If
door locks cycle 2 times, new transmitter code was not accepted. To
program an additional transmitter or to make a second attempt, return
to step 5) within 40 seconds.
7) Registration of recognition codes is complete under any of
the following conditions: l~

* Forty seconds has elapsed since wireless door lock ECU has
responded.
* Driver’s door is closed.
* Key is inserted in the ignition key cylinder.
* Four recognition codes are registered at one time.

Ederny, thanks for all your help. These programs are for 2002 IS300...right??? Let me get this straight...These programs are just for the keyless entry?? Or does it tell the ECU not to allow the lost key to be used to turn the ignition on??

With my wallet key...i can't turn the car on without hold the transponder next to the ignition. If i erase the lost key from the ignition...will the lost key be useless (like wallet key with no transponder) in trying to turn the vehicle on or just useless for the keyless

Will my wallet key and valet key be uselss or can I reprogram those also?

The reason I am concerned is that I go to a very small school and my car sticks out of the crowd. If someone has the lost key, they can still use it to get in the car manually. Will erasing the key from the keyless entry also prevent it from being used to turn the car on??

I am seriously contemplating on getting the CompuStar remote entry/alarm for my IS. However, reprogramming the keys might be a cheaper alternative.

Again...Thanks for all your help.
