Question Replaced MAF - mysterious oily substance

2000 RX300

Recently had CEL, code P0171. Today I changed out the MAF with a remanufactured one from Autozone.

However, I noticed on the original there was some oily residue coating the part, is this a bad sign?

Are you using a different intake?

OEM is dry filter and some have modified to a more free flowing intake and that generally needs a coating of oil which makes its way to the sensor.

The other possibility is residue after cleanup.

FYI ,,, general consensus is to only use OEM sensors. Please remember to post your experience .. 6months, 1 yr and 2 yr. Also track your mpg.

Thanks Salim.

I am the original owner, as far as I know the intake is original. Still, its curious that oily fluid would be there.

Anyway, the good news is that the CEL went out immediately, so problem solved for $79.99 and less than 5 minutes to do the job.

BTW, part No. 74-50009 from Autozone is an OEM Toyota/Denso part remanufactured by Cardone. Hopefully its as good as new, time will tell.
