Default Scanner use for RX300,LS430,LX470?

Hi all. I'm a new member and just bought my first Lexus (2000 RX300awd 100K miles).

I was able to borrow a relatives 2004 LS430 for an extended period of time after my car was hit and really liked the build quality and reliability, so I got one within my budget, the RX300.

My question is: I'd like to get a decent scanner, something more than a low cost code reader (willing to invest up to $250) as I think it will be well worth the money. I'd like to be able to use it for my 2000 RX300awd, but also for the 2004 LS430 and possibly for a future purchase: 2000-2005 LX470.

I have a great mechanic that only works on Toyota/Lexus, but would like to get a scanner to understand my car better, and begin to do some very simple repairs on my own, and not have to run to my mechanic every time I get an warning light. Possibly me doing more work in the future.

I did some research on the forums, and have a list started (Innonva 3150, 3100, others), but curious what others I should add before beginning to narrow? Great site and look forward to using it more. regards, nick

I really don't think you need anything beyond a low-cost reader. You get the OBDII code(s) from the reader and both look it/them up on your computer or ask on this forum. You must have other things to spend your money on.

If you have a smartphone, check out Torque Pro and Diag My Toyota. I use these with a Kiwi bluetooth adapter and they work great.

I am with bob2200 and would also remind you that the codes can be read for free at many auto-parts-stores (granted they generally do not reset the codes by the reader).
I would suggest that you get hold of the workshop manual (Lexus) as that would be more useful. Unfortunately, unlike the reader, you will have to purchase manual for each car you own.

Dont get wrong, I am not saying the advanced readers are bad, but only trying to guide you. Once you have the manual, and the know how, only then you can make use of real time data that you get from advanced reader.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to get one of the recommended readers as it sounds like scanners are beyond what I need for quite a while. I do have an iPhone (3GS, but upgrading to a 5 soon) and will see what is available for that.

Salimshah, I did get the Haynes and Chilton repair manuals, but will look to get a used set of the 2 part Lexus repair guides soon

thank again

Just left Autozone and they are not able to read any codes while there are four indicators on my dash. Been using an ELM327 with WIFI, works great on other cars, reads all stats (temp, gear, O2, catalyst, tach) but does not pull any codes with DashCommand.

I would suggest getting one that provides live data as well as static code reading/clearing.

Just curious; how much were those manuals and did you get them online or locally? Reason i ask is because i think it might be a worthwhile investment for me to get them as well. Thanks
