Hi, all. I am going to change my transmission fluid. I will do a flush, since it is a remanufactured one with only 12K miles on it. Now the question is that, if I drop the pan, should I add a paper based filter onto the metal screen? (sorry if I am wrong, I have no idea what should do)

There are two types of filters, one has metal screen and the other has paper-like-element. If you have a paper-like-element then the filter has to be replaced.If you have metal screen filter, it can be washed (I used gasoline) and then dried before reuse.

If you call Lexus parts they most probably carry the paper-like-element filter [it seems Lexus discontinued the metal-screen filter].

If you search you will find some members want to go back the metal-screen filter.

Which is better? Why did Lexus switch? These are unanswered questions.


FLUSH? We only recommend drain and fill. There is a safe way to flush, but you need to know what you are doing.

You mentioned it is a remanufactured Transmission. Do you know if it was rebuilt with the updated planetary gear set?

I don't want to do flush either, but they recommend to do a flush. Since I have a 3 years warranty, so I have to follow their instructions to honor the warranty.

Flush the trans yourself, by disconnecting the rubber return line under the radiator. There is a DIY process here at the top of the forum. Running the motor, drain the old dark oil into a bucket as you add the new oil in. Quit when you see the new red oil running out of the line.

That way you can change all the oil at one time (10+/- qts.). Clean reuse the metal filter, if your lucky enough to have it.

FWIW, my wife's has 104K on it, 2002 AWD, and I plan to replace the 'paper' filter with a metal mesh filter next trans fluid change.

Just 'cause it's 'new' does not automatically equal 'better'.

Just a thought ... the paper-like-element aught to do better in collecting fine gray dust.

I think I will stick with my metal mesh though.
