Default When Do You Turn On The Heater?

I figured I'd start a thread on how long everyone waits to turn on the heater during the winter.
I usually start the car up, and will only start the heat once the car is 2 notches above C.
Other's I know will start the heat as soon as they start the car, even if it's 20F outside and the engine is cold.

So, what do you guys do? And, is it more effective to start the heater as soon as you start the car? I'd imagine that doing that takes away heat from the engine, thus increasing warm-up time and wasting gas. But, if it get's heat to the cabin faster, then I will likely start turning the heater on as soon as I turn the car on.

I leave it on auto and it comes on when the engine starts to warm up. I should not take linger to warm up since you have to wait for the thermostat to open anyway.

I let the climate control work it.

But boy, heated seats sure are nice to have!

The thermostat keeps any coolant from circulating through the heater core until it's plenty warm, so it doesn't matter whether you wait or not.

Yeah, the heated seats do help!

It's 20F degree's outside right now, I'm getting ready to go pick up some dinner. This should be fun! LOL
At least it's about 10-15 degree's warmer in the garage.

I'll put the climate control on AUTO and see how it does. I hate how it automatically turns on A/C though. The compressor probably won't engage though as it's colder than 32F which is the minimum temperature the system allows it to turn on at.

Yeah, that's a huge pet-peeve of mine with automatic climate control. I always have to turn the A/C off, even in ridiculously cold temps.

I'd wager the compressor comes on, anyway. I know it will with the defogger/defroster, but there's good logic behind that. Chilled air is dry air...that's part of the 'conditioning' part.

A/C works just like a dehumidifier. That's why it comes on automatically with the defrost mode as well as the auto mode. It makes the windows defog much faster than without. Even if it's cold air.
