Default tool for 14mm hidden plenum bolt

Our local Lowes has Xtreme Access sockets on clearance sale. Less than $1.00 for individual socket and less than $5 for a set. I used one of these for that troublesome bolt I had read so much about, and it worked quite well.

These are pass-though sockets, with hex flats. A 3/4" SAE ratcheting wrench fit on the hex portion of the socket, and made for "low profile" socket that easily fit between the firewall and plenum. I backed the bolt out, and finished it with a regular 14mm ratcheting wrench.

Unfortunately these are "combo" sockets that supposedly fit both metric and SAE. I (like many) am not a big fan of these. But in this case for this application it worked well. And they are cheap...while supplies last.

FYI, I do see several of these on e-Bay for more retail prices.

Here is a picture of the socket. It worked well with a gear wrench to make a low profile racthet for the 14mm hidden bolt behind the plenum.

Why not use a box end ratchet ?

Those others are good if you have a long stud with a recessed nut where you need a pass through socket.

I have those but there is a lip on that bracket that makes it hard to get a wrench onto the bolt head

no special sockets are needed for the job if you loosen up the lower part of the bracket from beneath and loosen the intake manifold. The manifold can pivot away and give you enough space with a 1/4 drive 14mm ratchet.

Those are nice sockets though. Flats on the sides could be very useful in tight spaces or just to break rusted nuts loose without need of a breaker bar.

Pzindy, thank you for sharing. I got 2 socket sets, 3/8 and 1/4, since they are too good to pass; good quality sockets.
