Timing Belt / Time or Mileage?

Obvious signs of wear are cracking, chaffing, or shiny areas on the smooth side of the belt but lacking any of these does not mean the belt is good. I have seen a belt fail that looked practically new. Don't rely on a visual inspection of the belt to determine if it is good, only if it is bad. Look on top of the timing belt cover. If the belt was changed at a dealer, there will be a sticker there indicating the mileage at which it was last changed.
