Are some cars just good cars?
I have wondered what accounts for the fact that some of our RX300s see perfect service and preventative maintenence and lose their transmissions at 70K or are severely sludged at the same mileage and other RX300s have seen a more checkered service history and just keep on going. We always used to joke that you never wanted a car built Friday afternoon, but is there something to this. Obviously good service is important and the type of fluids chosen make a difference, but it seems like perfect service does not prevent failures. What do you weekend mechanics think?

Yes, some cars are just good cars in my opinion. But, we must help those cars be good cars by changing the oil regularly and having good common sense when it comes to routine maintenance.
I believe that there are certainly some transmission failures out there as well as engines being destroyed by sludge buildup. What you don't get is the other half of the story...how often did the oil get changed? How was the car driven over it's lifetime? People generally come on these boards after something has gone wrong and who are seeking advice for their situations. I doubt the 100's of thousands of RX300 users bother to come to boards like this to just say that things are great.
This is not to say that some haven't been wronged by these cars, and what I submit to you is that every car on the planet can and will have something go wrong with it.
I strongly beleive you get out of a car what you put into it, for the overwhelming majority of the time. There ARE still lemons out there and every carmaker is guilty of them.

Cars are machines and each machine will exhibit some uniqueness. Although they are designed the same way, but manufacturing (and build) will have deviations and afterwords, use and care and environment will make them different from each other.
Like all machines, one time abuse can have lasting effects. This is the very reason, I do not let others drive my cars.
