2003 RX 300 Fuel Smell
Hi,
I have a 2003 RX300. When it is running there is a constant fuel fume smell outside the vehicle. It is to the point that I have to run the environmental system in recirc so I don't have the smell inside. There is never a fuel drip outside the car and the shop has done a smoke test and finds nothing wrong or leaking.
Anyone else out there experiencing this problem?
I had thought perhaps the charcoal canister was saturated but I don't want to throw a $400 part at the problem only to find I am wrong. There are no faults or lights display to indicate an emission problem.
Thanks for your input in advance,
Fred

Welcome to the Club.
I would first look for exhaust leaks. Keep in mind that even though you may not see gas, there is some gasoline that passes through the exhaust unburned (measured as HC or Hydrocarbons on an emissions test) and if there is an exhaust leak somewhere, that smell will come through.

Hi,
Great, thanks so much for the information. I will look into that right away. Is there a spot in the exhaust system that is noted for leaking over time? Perhaps a gasket or something of that nature?
Great to be a part of the forum!

Any areas with joints (bolts hold it together). Underneath the motor there is an accordion like joint and that can crack. Also look at both the front and back manifolds by the A/F sensor and see if there is a crack.
