Look at this post it'll tell you how to remove the U-shaped wood trim...https://www.clublexus.com/forums/881715-post2.html
There is a thread on there somewhere with a picture, of how to remove it and where the pins are I'll try and look some more....
This isn't the exact picture: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/3849685-post2.html
but in the top left picture you can see where the holes for the clips are in the dash, that should help... Start from the top right.

Quote from wiki i just noticed explains it better. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassette_tape
A portable CD player would have its analog line-out connected to the adapter, which in turn fed the signal to the head of the cassette deck. These adapters continue to function with MP3 players as well, and are generally more reliable than the FM transmitters that must be used to adapt CD players to MP3s. MP3 players shaped as audio cassettes have also become available, which can be inserted into any tape player and communicate with the head as if they were normal cassettes.[46][47]

Thanks for the replies. I managed to get the trim off, and plugged in the new modulator. Sound quality is perfectly acceptable for me.
I don't want to leave the modulator unsecure behind the dash. Has anyone found a good place to mount it or secure it? There seems to be lots of empty space, but no hooks or ledges or easy mounting points.

WHY has no one mentioned that the only way to do this with sound quality that is acceptable is to hardwire an aux in through the CD changer in the dash?....I put a toggle switch in and it sounds wonderful. I have tried FM transmitter and tape deck...both are half as good at best as hardwire....
Took me 30 minutes and cost $3 for the switch and 3.5mm cables

Grom Adapter
I just put this in a couple weeks ago and it has been working great: Grom USB/iPod adapter. I didn't have a CD changer so it just plugs into the changer port. If you have a changer best bet is the switch mentioned above.

Grom Adapter
That sounds really interesting. Please let us know what model Grom and what the inputs are. I watched the Grom video on Youtube that covered the installation pretty well, but their web site isn't clear on what Grom models work with an RX-300. I haven't used my CD changer in years.

Grom Adapter
Grom's website has this:
I was wanting iPod as well as Aux and figured I might as well go for the (more expensive) USB model since they said only it works. I can't say whether the other models would work or not. According to this thread it seems to just be a firmware issue that Grom is working on.

Aux In Switch
Here is the aux in switch thread. To switch between iPod and the CD changer you would need to switch all of the lines that hook up to the changer and iPod adapter. Not sure how well that would work.

That rocker switch in the photo looks so little -- like a one-wire (or whatever you would call it) switch. I wouldn't mind having a larger switch somewhere if I knew what to get. The current capacity doesn't have to be very high, but it has to open/close several little circuits at once. I don't know what's available!

Best buy one for $1.25 on ebay and pull it to bits and remake your own with the parts
so it doesn't rattle or even spin makes no noise and put a better quality cable on it and you wont beat the sound.
