Smile Trouble Code 1349/VVTi solution

1999 RX 300 AWD
Symptoms: Intermittent low speed "lunge" while accelerating after warm up.
Code 1349 (VVTi system malfunction Bank 1)

(1) Replaced the cam sensor. Didn't help.
(2) Replaced the Bank 1 oil control valve. Symptoms went away, but the check engine light came back on.
(3) Replaced the Bank 1 oil control valve filter (Lexus part # 15678-20010). Runs perfectly. Check engine light has stayed off.

Thought this might be useful info. Oil sludge ruled out during replacement of valve cover gasket and new timing belt.

That OCV is a funny thing when it comes up.

I just don't understand why you would first replace a
Cam sensor when the code is for VVTI OCV ???

I was wondering..... the difficulty level to replace this filter? I had a previously sludge/oil burning issue that was resolved with Auto-RX, I would like to replace this as a precautionary measure....especially because the part is only $5.

This was easy to do. There's a short bolt and nut that holds the filter in place. When you buy the part at a Lexus dealer ask for a printout that shows the location. Also...there is a filter for Bank 1 and Bank 2. I only replaced the Bank 1 filter.

This was my first experience with this problem and I made a mistake. Also, the error code did not indicate the oil control valve. It indicated there was a malfunction in the VVT system.

Bumping this...looking for someone who knows where on the RX the filter is? I understand ES and RX have similiar/same engines. (I have a 00 ES) I threw the code on the opposite bank. Have both OCVs on order but want to check the filters Cannot find them. See they exist on the transmission end of cylinder, but not entitrely sure what I am looking for.

Lexus is an excellent vehicle but after a long trip from Illinois to Saskatchewan, pulling a trailer, my 2000 Lexus RX300 is starting to show sign of aging. First one of the cooling hose under the intake manifold started to leak, so I tackle the task and fix it, then 3 weeks later, I got a code 0300 then 0303 and 0305, I removed spark plug number 5 and noticed it has some build up even when they were replaced just a couple of years ago, it seemed like if it has been in the car longer than that, I replaced the spark plugs, now a couple of weeks later, the car started having a bad idling, the brake pedal is really hard, seems to me the car is not running ok there is not enough vacuum for the booster brake, the engine light came out and I got codes 1349, 0300, 0301, 0303, 0305. I looked in the forum and I found that some else had the same problem with the screens on the OCV oil control valve. Tomorrow I'm going to spend my Sunday removing them, cleaning them and checking the OCV applying voltage to the OCVs to see if the work properly. I really hope it's just the screens. I will post some pictures and the results of this ordeal, hoping someone else may benefit of it.

Here's a picture of the location of the Bank 2 (front) OCV filter with my socket wrench on the bolt that removes it and the filter after removal.

I just had to do this to my own, It was odd because I was getting the vvt fault code for bank 2, I checked to ocv and replaced the cam position sensor, then I went to check the timing and bothe the left and right side cams were off a tooth:-/. put that back into place and it was still giving me the code then i switched out the bank 1 cam pos sensor and found the screens thanks to the above pics and so far so good.

Well I did work on my car's problem yesterday at a -30 C celsius temperature but it worth all the work, the car now work fine, no more problems with the idle and loosing the brake because not enough vaccum (code 1349) all I got now is code 1130 which tells me I need to change one of the 02 sensor, the car runs fine now even with this new code, as soon as i change the 02 sensor I will post more updated comments
