Exclamation Valve tapping noise

I have a "99 AWD. Sometimes in low gear or when accelerating slowly there is valve tapping noise except if throttle pedal is pressed hard (This obviously makes the gear to change and fuel consumption will increase).
What could be responsibe? Fuel rating issue or do I need to adjust valve clearance?
I don't have check light on. Aside this, car is performing excellently.

Were you noticing this just inside the vehicle or outside the vehicle, as I know something that can sound similar to the noise being described outside of it being a lifter or valve.

The noise is noticed while driving in the vehicle, had it today in the morning too but I'm sure its from the engine. Other suggestion would also be checked.

The one area that has a similar sound is the flywheel/drive plate between the torque converter and the engine.

Take a look at this thread and you'll see pictures of what happened to mine. When fractured it will make a similar sound to what you're hearing. It's almost right at the point where the transmission meets the engine.

Lexmex thanks for your input so far. There is no visible crack or leakage from my tranny and the fluid is at normal gauge. The tapping noise does not come up always.
When the noise occurs, if I just reduce the throttle slightly the noice will cease or if pedal is depressed hard to cause a change in gear and will drive without the noise. What else can I check?

It won't be a tranny leak per se, it will however be a noise.

Another possibility to check is the gasket in front of the main catalytic converter beneath the vehicle. It's held together by two 14mm bolts. It make a click/tap noise at very low speeds. You may need an outside observer to verify this, but as the gasket goes, the noise increases. See if you can tighten up the bolts. I finally got rid of the gasket altogether and the photo below was the first step.

No, that was one of the guys at Hangar 1, which you may remember was one of the exhaust shops I used in Mexico (at least before their prices shot through the roof).
