Default rear Axle Shaft grease

hi,

what is the meaning of grease coming out of rear axle shaft?

if i am buying this part online, what is the best way to confirm that the part i am getting is the same? local firestone told me that i have to replace rear cv axle half shaft as there is a leak.

most of the online; pep boys have only front. none of them have rear.

does anyone know if its the same as below?

I know it says all wheel/4 wheel drive, but are you absolutely sure that is for the rear? I think the front axle shafts are different on 2&all wheel drive, so it seems to me they could possibly be fronts for an all wheel drive. I would definitely call them.

Grease falling out, typically happens when the rubber boot has a rip.

Some unscrupulous shops [not all shops are unscrupulous] poke a screwdriver through the boot-hoses to generate work. A few times people run over loose plastic, which wraps around the boot and causes it to rip. A weak spot may rip too.

If the rip is detected early, one can repack the grease and put on a new boot, but if the grease runs out and dirt goes in, the joint gets ruined.

I would strongly suggest a boot repair, without removing the half shaft from the diff. If you remove the shaft from the diff, then you must replace the seals of the diff.
