I am going to sale my 01 rx300. It has 120k miles and the only thing wrong with it is the p0770 code. The lights wont go off. Lexus said a re-man TRANSMISSION. $4000. Local trans shop said $2500. Can they not just replace the sensor in the transmission. How much is a used transmission install cost?

I tried to trade it in to the dealership that sold it. They said $4500 -$5000 was all it was worth with the light on.

I have it listed for sale for $9500, but $7000 right now looks good. The transmission runs fine. It is just this stupid sensor and I am too honest to take the bulbs out.... Help. What do I do?

P0770 is a Shift Solenoid E Malfunction.

That can be one of three things,

1. Shift Solenoid E. (Getting to this area does not require removing the tranny, but it does require taking off the pan, filter and then the valve body.

2. The valve body. There could be a crack or something else there. I have somewhere a picture somewhere of this other tranny that showed a big chunk of the corner of the valve body, cracked and it looked like something took a bit out of it (tranny was already busted anyway).

3. Torque converter. This requires taking out the tranny to fully get at the area. This isn't common for these things to get messed up and I would lean toward item 1 or 2, because that's not as difficult a repair and the solenoid is a more common issue than the other two.

Taking out the light might seem nice, but a smart mechanic will check this. I remember getting my Uncle Antonio back in Mexico a scanner in part for this purpose since he would take a look at a lot of newer vehicles, particularly 2001+ which even European cars sold in Mexico that weren't sold here had OBD2 and he caught quite a few people who had pulled the bulb but the code reader didn't lie.

I am experiencing the transmission problem with the shift solenoid valve I believe. I am going to purchase the solenoids or at least price them? Are there 5 on the valve?

I would suggest an independent tranny shop, maybe through word of mouth...they can probably do it all for $2900 to $3200....

I got the part list. Which solenoid is it. There are 5:
35290a - Solenoid Assembly, Line Pressure Control
35210 - Solenoid Assembly, Clutch Control, No.1
35240 -Solenoid Assembly, Automatic Transmission 3Way
35220 -Solenoid Assembly, Clutch Control, No.2
35230 -Solenoid Assembly, Transmission 3Way, No.2

All 5 from sewell cost -$1000....

I have an appointment with a good transmission shop in Tulsa. I have used in the past with my infiniti. Iam taking the plans and thoughts. But wanted to get the price to order overnight the solenoid if needed.

I am not sure on the part number and the manual doesn't list anything other than letters. Sewell should know which one it is because when I bought some pieces when I did some tranny work back in 07 the dealer I ordered my parts from in the U.S. had a full breakdown on their computer of what piece when where (a schematic).

Also be sure and post back with your final outcome. I don't know of anyone yet who got away with just a solenoid replacement but it would be nice. I think you are about to get a trans rebuild.

I took all the information down there.. Final is a new transmission $4500, used $3100, reman $3500. I am going to trade it in for $5000.
