Default back hatch wont stay open when its ridiculously cold

so the past few mornings have been ridiculously cold outside, below 30, and the back hatch wouldnt stay up, im guessing the rods that hold it open are going and should be replaced but i was curious, whats in those rods that would be affected when really cold?

also anybody know the part numbers lol

Those things are gas charged (similar to a shock absorber) and if they leaked out any gas,it will be noticeable in weather like were having now. Then they will eventually get like that all the time.

There are two types of going bad ..

When they loose the spring (which counters the weight), the door will not stay open and will need lot of force to lift.

The other part is the damper which just resists the quick flip up motion of the door.

Note that there is a less-expensive alternative to OEM:

http://liftsupportsdepot.com

I've been using these for about two years and they work fine. I think they are custom-made for the importer in Turkey. They don't have quite as much chrome plating, but do the job.

I've noticed something similar with mine lately too. Mine stays open but it doesn't flip open on it's own like it used to. I have to physically push it to the top to ensure I don't smack my head on it as I begin loading the car.

Which part do I have to replace? (I assume it's different from the original poster's issue?)

well up until this summer after I pulled the latch to open the tail i would have to pull it maybe 1/4 of the way and I could let go and it would raise itself the rest of the way. This has stopped and gotten increasingly bad with the cold weather. It still opens up up to the halfway point, but I have to push it up to the top so I can have easy access.

Have you installed yours yet?
