You definitely should have a spare master key. Otherwise, if your master key goes bad or you lose it, you have the hastle/expense of replacing/reflashing the ECU computer.

This has been covered many times in the past. The Lexus dealers will sometimes offer a one-time "free" ECU replacement, but the cost of two master keys from them eat up any savings. There are places that you can send your ECU to, by overnight mail, that will reflash and include two uncut master keys, for maybe $300-$400 (as I recall).

Just to clarify, the blade of the master-key and valet key have different personalization (cuts/groove) to lock out glove compartment etc. This personalization is of the "dumb" kind and has nothing to do with the electronics "brain". When we talk about the matching with ECU we are talking about the "brain" part of the key (in the clam shell).

In other words having a key blank cut to match the master key (can have its advantages) but to avoid reflashing ECU you need the "brain". The electronic id of the "brain" of master key, allows registering of other keys. The ecu reflash essentially loads another master-key id.

so I'm confused.....will a regular blank that I buy from ebay work as a backup key should I loose my key with the elecronics inside it? I'm basically wanting a key to put in the drawer at home in case I can't find my regular key that I can fall back on. but, I do not want to pay for one with the circuitry in it already. Thanks for some clarification.

If I understand your question (and I think I do), that's not gonna work- because you have to have the electronics to start the car. The only thing one without the electronics would do is open the lock, or turn the ignition on, but without the electronics it's not going to start the car.

I have also heard that the Chinese keys are bum- some kind of problem with cutting them or something or other and at that price, if I were a betting man, I'd bet those are made in China. I don't know from experience, but those things are pathetically cheap.

A "blank" key won't do anything. It has to be "cut" to unlock the door and has to have the electronics to start the car. Sparekeys.com does offer a cut key with a "chip". It will unlock and start the car but has no remote. The key does have to be programed.

I have two types of key for my 1999 RX300 - the electronic one (master) with the remote lock and panic button and a non-electronic one which the handle (?) is just a little bit smaller and which opens the doos and starts the car just fine.

So I don't think you need the electronics to enter the vehicle or start it.

Most cars today have the chip built in, even my son's 2001 F-250. Maybe they started it 2000+

I bet that key has a chip enbedded.

I have a "credit card" key, you insert the key and hold the card near the key to get it to start
