No oil in oil filter

The relief valve is just a spring loaded flap or ball. When the pressure is high enough on the spring (because the filter media is clogged) the oil pressure overcomes the spring and bypasses the filter media. It still flows through filter cannister, it just skips the filter media.

there is no relief system in in the filter assy sytem at all. some filter have a war emergency bypass that allow minimal flow if the media is completey clogged , at which point it is academic anyway , but thats not the issue.

True, there is nothing to cause the oil to completely bypass the filter cannister, but it will bypass the filter media. (paper or synthetic) Compare the size of the oulet tube to the bypass valve, that is full flow not an emergency trickle. This bleeds pressure off the filter media to keep the tube from collapsing and oil flowing. If the engines oil galleys are clogged, there is nowhere for the oil to go and bypassing the filter media would not help. It would not collapse the tube because the pressure would be the same on both sides of it.

Show me an engine that has a pressure bypass to return oil to the pan instead of the engine, and I'll show you an engine that will burn up the first time the owner misses an oil change.

None, not one ever. Come on!!! Every, Every, Every!!! manufacturing process makes defective units.
Oil filter failure modes, just off the top of my head:
Leaking seals - oil running down block
leaking pressure bypass- causes oil to constantly bypass filter, reduce filtration
leaking media - reduced filtration
bypass stuck shut - could cause canister to explode, or outlet tube to crush or both, if media becomes clogged.

They might not all explode, but out of all the oil filters made there have been plenty that don't do what they were supposed too.
